To Love-Ru Episode 22 – Cultural Festival

The special theme for screenshots today will be nothing but shots of cosplay… and will probably have nothing to do with the text following it.

Okay, honestly… I didn’t think this episode was that bad. It was actually relatively good compared to most of the crap that they’ve released in the past. However, this by far does not mean that this was a spectacular episode at all. But, I think this episode was a lot closer to being “acceptable” than the few previous episodes.

Summary

Everyone at school is preparing for the school cultural festival. Yui naturally tries to take charge and offers two (boring) options for what the class should do for the festival. This gets immediately taken over by Saruyama who proposes an idea that fits with everyone’s opinions, an animal cosplay cafe.

Meanwhile, Yami tries to look for a job as she cannot forget her profession as an assassin. And of course, since she lacks much knowledge about Earth, she ignorantly tries to search for a job in assassination. It’s also revealed that Yami is actually 24 years old in Earth time (not sure if I really want to believe Xebec on this one).

Everyone works on getting everything ready for the animal cosplay cafe. Yui gets a bit depressed and loses her self-confidence after having her ideas turned down by everyone. Haruna comes along and cheers her up and everyone is happily working on the festival again.

During the day of the festival, one of the waitresses was not able to make it due to a fever. While everyone was trying to figure out what to do with the extra costume, Yami appears looking for a “job”. Of course, due to the extreme coincidence, Yami fills in the spot for the missing student. It also turns out the Saki was trying to do an insect cosplay cafe that pretty much failed, attracting only one customer.

Impressions

Nothing really special happened this episode. Cultural festival episodes were always more about fun and stuff anyways. The animal cosplay cafe idea turned out nicely as it gave some decent fanservice. I’m not sure how I felt about the whole Yami trying to find a job or the emo Yui bits of the episode, but at least with emo Yui it felt like the writers were trying at least. I guess the job hunting Yami was just a lame excuse to include her in the cosplay cafe in the end. Overall, I kind of liked episode as there wasn’t anything too stupid about it. It was a bit boring at times, but at least it wasn’t retarded.

Next episode looks like it will definitely be retarded. I think we’re going back to “To LOATHE-Ru” here with idiotic episodes. I mean with Saruyama as the main character again and the lame filter over everything to make it look like it’s in the past or something can’t really prove to be a worthwhile episode.

How far this series has fallen, that we have become excited with non-retarded episodes. On the other hand, when was this series ever good? The only episode I liked was the first one, or did I? Nothing makes sense anymore!

I’m of the opinion that a pretty girl is pretty even in standard, or even bland, clothing. I don’t see the appeal of cosplay.

@phil: There was a few episode I didn’t find to be that horrible, but you’re right about how low the standards have gone with this series.

@SoSo/Karin lover: Me too, but it was a bit strange when all we saw where mostly “feline” cosplay and then suddenly there was a pig and a cow in there somewhere.

@skoll: I pretty much feel the same way. Clothes don’t make the person, but it generally leaves an impression. That’s why you dress up to an interview to leave a good impression. If you want a bunch of teenage boys with raging hormones to come to your cafe, you dress in revealing cosplay… granted you’re a girl. It’s dirty, but it provides results most of the time.

@xrampage: I thought Yui looked pretty awesome myself. =P

    @LDC: Haha, yep.

I found it funny that Yui was asking the person whose outfit was more revealing if her own outfit was too revealing. XD

Ok, I paused TLR for two week.

I can say episode 21 and 22 weren’t really bad.
I really liked episode 22,for me it was one of the better episodes.
What I liked were the class activity scenes and the Yami storyline.
“I hope its related to assasination” lol

Yami-chan made this episode worthwhile. Though it’s amazing that the show can do anything but be horrible at this stage in th game. Anyone notice the weird noises at the end of the episode? It sounded like something left over from the dubbing process.

@Detroit metal city: I’m not sure either what that part meant. I just figured she was just an old lady talking nonsense.

@Omisyth: I think you’re referring to the noises in the background after the song was over (the laughing and what not). That’s actually part of the full version of the OP song and the end of it as sort of an “outro” I guess.
