More importantly what is she thinking about?
I never did expect to like Toradora! much, still while I have mild levels of love for Taiga toradorable though she maybe (as she is loli enough to reside three miles past the point of uncomfortable and has yet to use her wealth to provide Takasu with decent ingredients) I did find myself liking Ami more and more as the episodes go by. I like her not only because she looks more developed biologically than Taiga but also because she is so deliciously insincere that it is hard to read her character and her motives. While there have been many who have wondered if Ami-tan ever did take off her mask I do suppose she has, instead of pretending to be an air head the whole time, shown much more of her mischievous self and insincere tone to those around her. Perhaps the Ami we see now is the real Ami, a person with a unique gift for obfuscation. If nothing else Ami has no problem using a ball with lethal force against Yusaku.
Leaving are we, Ryuji? Were it so easy…
Oh Ami-chan does know how much Ryuji can’t say no to cleaning something…
Not that Ami-chan needs to know, she just wants him to confess what went on in dirty mind of his.
I confess that I have not watched much within the harem genre, but from what I have seem Ami seems to be rather unique this year in that she seems to show much more cunning than your average haremette. The fact that Ami is already aware of where Ryuji’s crush at least indicates some significant powers of observation and deduction, and as a result points to Ami having a high degree of intelligence. Moreover she is already aware of Yusaku’s disinterest in Taiga and possibly about Yusaku’s crush on Sumire. Like a future top tier operative it is very possible that Ami is making a file on everyone, and so far she at least knows which buttons to push on both Taiga and Ryuji. Subtlety seems to be her strong point as she lacks that spectacular flair that Taiga seems to be oozing out constantly. Taiga may possess the brute strength but Ami seems to be a bit more precise in expending her efforts as demonstrated by the Taiga pool toss. Not only is her precision impressive, but her mental agility is worth noting as well. I was quite impressed with how she turned that shower thing around and humiliated Ryuji in the space of less than a minute. Ami went from hearing him to figuring out a plan a executing it with devastating results that made Ryuji cry like a sissy at the drop of a hat.
It took Ryuji a while to realize that he had been toyed with…
Ami-chan is spicy…
So you like Minorin, your thoughts betray you. Taiga was wise to hide it from me, but now her failure is complete…
If nothing else Ami is confident to the point of arrogance though one has to wonder if she is being genuinely narcissistic or just putting up another layer of smoke to keep people guessing. All that can be said for certain is that Ami has the knack for playing mind games as Ryuji was sent crying back to Taiga after she toyed with his pure boy heart, though as she did succeed perhaps Ryuji is not so loyal to Minorin as he thinks. The thing that makes Ami’s private little war with Taiga is that Ami is better able to get under the latter’s skin in ways that not even a brutal beating could equal. Sure Taiga might be able to inflict a bit of physical pain, but the wounds from the kiddie swim suit might well last a lifetime as Taiga has yet to have her growth spurt. Where Taiga never seems to have all of her wits about her given her uncertainty in just about everything including herself, Ami at least knows herself a bit more and certainly knows what her own agenda is and how to execute it. Out of the titular five it is Ami that acts as the catalyst for accelerating developments. Ami forces Taiga to react to her omnipresent threat and that at least keeps things interesting in the short term.
Part of me still wonders if goading Ryuji to make an extra spicy curry wasn’t part of one of her schemes, in any case I doubt it could have gone any better in feeding sweet curry loving Taiga some real curry.
Ami is a veteran of being around Yusaku, I suspect that Taiga doesn’t even know half of Kitamura’s quirks…
She speaks the truth of course…
There is a large degree of transparency to every one but Ami. Ryuji obviously has the hots for Minorin, Minorin is living in her own little world, Taiga is gunning for Yusuke and for now harbors little overt romantic interest in her inu (taking an active part in trying to hand Minorin over to Ryuji does not in my mind indicate romantic attachment), and Yusuke gave up long ago on Taiga and has his heart set on Sumire. However we can never be sure if Ami is genuinely interested in Ryuji or simply delights in picking on the simpleton. The one thing we can count on in regards to the other five is that for now she seems to know Yusuke too well to actually harbor any feelings other than that of friendship. Unlike the rest it was only Ami who kept her cool after Yusuke decided to streak as Taiga froze up and Minorin just went blank. Perhaps in the end much of the mystery surrounding Ami’s motivations will disappear, but until then at least she remains deliciously different from the typical well meaning kind of female you expect from the genre, I am quite sure that Ami has plans within plans to keep Taiga off balance. With any luck Ami-chan will be able to mislead those around her with enough innuendo, half-truths, and bald face lies while looking hawt to keep us all guessing at what her true agenda is.
Even if Ami is not the nicest person of the year at least she boasts something that is sorely lacking within the typical haremette, intelligence and the willingness to use it. Ami-chan is clever and cunning, and that makes her my kind of scum. Ami might be a bitch, but the same can be said of Taiga. Taiga certainly could do with a lot more tact when she interacts with people and definitely could do more to quell her outbursts. More often or not we wear masks when we go out in public, there ought to be no displeasure that Ami is more than capable of doing the same. After all we are expected to be on our best behavior in public, for is it not dishonest to smile at a person you loathe rather than reaching over the table and clocking them?
Well it seems that Taiga was shocked and awed by what she saw…
A bald faced lie, no doubt…
I like her scowl.

I can’t believe you failed to point out how much she looks like Tsuruya when she laughed in that scene. A true LOL-FANG-TAN laugh, minus the fang. As for the mind-games… it should be noted that Kitamura has stated she’s been playing them pretty much her whole life, which is part of why he tried to warn Ryuuji when he got a moment, during that ‘I have to go to the bathroom’ scene. Beyond that, her whole role in this series is basically to be the destabilizer; everyone else is set in their ways… and she isn’t, or rather she’s set in hers which puts her in almost complete opposition to the others.
And as some drama professors have noted throughout the ages, it’s hard to have drama without something to agitate a situation… and that person is Ami, which like the grit in an oyster, produces the irritant around which everything builds.
She is very much the fifth wheel.
I also get the feeling of lonliness coming from her, from her unusual request to Ryuuji to go out walking on the beach (and the genuine dissapointment following) to her looks in the bedroom during Minorin’s monologue. To get so involved with these other four people and start her scheming between them may be her way of bonding. I don’t want to sound like a ’shipper’ but I think she is somewhat interested in Ryuuji, but Ryuuji can’t take her seriously and her own double personalities is working against her.
But that’s all speculation whereas yours was much more grounded, and detailed. Very nice work, it’s a great character study.
@ Haesslich
I am not really sure but from what I heard, both Ami and Minori are actually people who tried to stabilize the relations between everyone later on in the story which however did not work so well due to some of the characters carelessness or dishonesty towards themselves. So I would not say that Ami is there to agitate the situation.
yep this show sure is hilarious and worth watching other than the other crappy harem type shows *akane-iro* somethin
@Haesslich
It has been so long that the absence of really long green hair and fang made me miss it. Still I await Ami-chan to give me one godly hair toss. Given how Ami has always been that manipulative I guess tossing aside that maske meant tossing aside that air head persona, still it serves some purpose as it leads to some characters underestimating her. It certainly would be a different series without her.
@RogerOskaner
It might well be loneliness, but it is not necessarily love by any means considering how Minorin is not even a target.
@Silver
Well at least we know that she is aggravating Taiga, in the short term, not sure if I can see a kinder gentler Ami-chan in the future.
@semeoneor
Indeed, though mileage may vary as always.
qq doesn’t show up on my comp… I am saddened. I need my loli-fix now! (Especially since the only other thing I’m watching now is Ghost Hound, and it is creeping me out. Taiga, chase the scary things away!)
Bathtub scene was golden, and the shots of Ami pointing and laughing are oh-so-exploitable.
I wish you included the cap of Ami’s reaction to the Bodhisattva dance, though.
Whoa, i starting to like Ami more and more.
I really really like the episode 9. It is very hilarious and it is the very first episode that hinted me a character development. (except Yusaku XD)
Umm where can you get episode nine? I can’t seem to find it anywhere. >:(
Well DAMN, never figured you would watch a harem anime and like it.Perhaps I should give it a try ?
So let’s see. Ami has the brains and cunning, Taiga has the physical ability and brute force, they hate each others’ guts, but one can just imagine that if they work together, they can accomplish anything they want….
Wait a minute. LelouchXSuzaku, Mk II?
OH GEASS NO…..
…wait. They’re LADIES.
OH TORADORA YES!
Personally I don’t know but I still don’t really classify this show as a harem show. It just does not feel like it unlike many other shows. However, that’s just me.
@Sorako-chan
Might be codec problem perhaps?
@schneider
If only mass uploading were easier.
@SoSo/Karin lover
Isn’t Ami-chan just great, it’s always fun with her around.
@foomafoo
I doubt Yusaku will get much development depending on how long they plan on making it, still they must bring back Sumire.
@Arb
CoalGuys.
@Zentari
Perhaps, it has its moments though mind you I avoided ZnT for the most part so Taiga might be less annoying for me.
@Ascaloth
Pffft…Taiga doesn’t know what she’s thinking, and besides if there is to be a yuri pair I favor Ami-chan and Sumire…
@Silver
Well it will be harem if both Taiga and Minorin start showing overt interest, at least with Ami-chan it is a definite maybe.
toradorable….excellent pun is excellent.
I should rewatch this episode…previously I think mentioned elsewhere (I forget) that 08 was my favorite thus far but after all the posts written about 09 – and there must have been a tonne – it does warrant reinvestigation. I’m still confused as to her sincerity, just how conniving is she? There were visual elements (your last screencap) that suggests she is sincere in times of frustration, but you still have to wonder.
Definitely finding this series more and more enjoyable to watch.
As for Ami…I can say that I am definitely a fan of her character type. Having the two different personalities and the portrayal of both are incredibly delicious to watch, though I won’t be the first to admit that I love her “true” self. Especially when conflict arises with Taiga in school. ^_^ Anticipating more of her putting Ryuuji in awkward situations!
HELLO!!!!!!! PEOPLE, You guyz are missing something incredibly important when discussing the characters, there’s DEFINATELY more to Minorin than just her own little world, even she needs someone to get togther with in her little world.
And Besides, don’t you remember the sentence Minorin said before getting cut of.
She said that if Ryuuji continued to change her world…. and then got cut off, that could lead to some major depth in her character for being a bit lonely.
I do so enjoy Ami-tan than most of the other characters in this series. Yes they provide all the comedy and romance, but Ami adds that extra spice to it all. In the case of her being lonely, I suppose this is partly in due to her intelligence and apparent maturity over the other characters. So much so that she feels somewhat out of place in it all.
Regarding KAZUKI’s comment about Minorin, yes I agree with you wholeheartedly dude. That little scene made me go “ooooh, well well…”. It may also explain part of why she’s always working her ass off doing odd jobs left and right not to mention her numerous school activities. I’d say more but I suppose I should leave some material to whoever is going to do an analysis for cheery ‘ol Minorin ^_^
