Skip Beat 5 – Ruriko the *****

We need more Ren x Kyoko scenes. Impz demands it. Impz wants it!

I don’t care if I am going to say some major spoilers but Ruriko is a total pain in the ass. In fact, I generally wish to lynch her until the end of the arc because that stupid woman hurt my sweet Kyoko-sama’s ankle so badly. Anyway, Kyoko finally gets into LME through the Love me section, a section created by Lory for people who are missing a special quality to become a star.

It’s time for the transformation of a princess, the princess known as Kyoko-sama!

Summary

null

Lory met up with Kyoko, and asked if she has the desire to love others. She said she did not, but wished to get back that human quality. Lory was satisfied with her answer and explained how the “Love me” section functions. Kyoko needs to get stamps from jobs given by other employees in LME, and will be rated on her work. The more points she get, the more likely that she will be given a major debut by LME. Kyoko thanked Lory for the chance, and went to her locker space.

She was thinking that the section might be fun, but the gaudy pink jumpsuit that was her compulsory clothing was an eyesore. Kyoko eventually got her first job to clean up a dirty floor. Kyoko wanted to kill those who were laughing at her looks, but hung on to clean the floor grudgingly. We also see a cut scene of Dicktaro trying to pick a fight with Ren, but he was brushed aside easily. Back to Kyoko, she manage to cause everyone to fall from the over polishing. That caused her to get a pathetic ten points from Sawada. In her mind, she was getting annoyed at those idiots who were not careful enough to slip. However, that old lady (previous episode) had given Kyoko -10 points, and the 10 points she got means this is the time to make a fresh start.

null

While she was pondering about this, her back was knocked by Ruriko Matsunai. She decided to offer Kyoko a task. Back in the LME top office, Lory and the acting manager was discussing about how the current plan was done to fix Ruriko’s terrible prima donna attitude. On the day of the shoot, Ruriko was complaining about the hot sun while inside a well-covered car. Kyoko speculated that she might be sensitive to UV rays. Kyoko said that Ruriko was a poor thing since she had to act despite her poor health. Ruriko’s manager said that there were many times where the sun became inconvenient for Ruriko to travel around.

Kyoko obviously started to dream of Ruriko as a frail princess. Ruriko’s manager informed Kyoko that Ruriko wanted Kyoko to protect her from the sun. Suddenly, the car stalled and they had to cover the short walk to the site. Ruriko started to whine and complain about having to walk, despite Kyoko carrying a heavy ultraviolet-protection umbrella to give her shade. Ruriko said that the crew should pick her up but relented when she heard Ren was waiting for her. Kyoko was shocked how the name of Ren was able to persuade Ruriko.

null

Kyoko was reluctant to go to the site since Ren was there. After walking for five minutes, Ruriko sprawned on the floor and started whining. Kyoko was hence forced to carry Ruriko on her back while carrying the heavy umbrella. Kyoko felt like she was losing her senses but felt that she had to protect Ruriko. Ruriko eventually reached the site alone, and was very polite to her co-workers. The directors were a bit surprised at her polite behavior compared to her perceived prima donna attitude.

One of the workers wondered how Ruriko reached the site alone. It turned out that Kyoko carried her to almost the full distance before spraining her ankle. Kyoko was worried for Ruriko’s illness, but Ruriko said that she would go ahead and call someone to fetch Kyoko. Back at the site, it was clear that Ruriko hated Kyoko for getting special leeway to enter LME despite having no talent. Kyoko, on the other hand, was unable to move due to her ankle. She wondered if she was going to burn away alone, but the last person she wished to meet came over to save her. It was Ren.

Please allow me to waste one paragraph to flame the living lights out of that prima donna bitch known as Ruriko. First, she’s a total bitch that totally lied to our sweet and innocent Kyoko. Second, I hope that a drama will required her to be tan and make that tan irreversible for this sunlight hating woman. Third, I hope she will one day become Kyoko’s assistant and she will be forced to carry our GREAT KYOKO-SAMA UP A VERY STEEP SLOPE. In addition, I hope she will sprain her ankle and be abandoned at the roadside!

Ok, that calmed me down a little. I am not sure if the scene about her mother abandoning her was ever shown in the manga, but I felt that it was a very painful scene nonetheless. It’s perhaps the first glimpse of Kyoko’s rather depressing family life, since it was clear that her relationship with her mother was very strained at the very least. It is quite sad that she already lost all faith and hope of people due to her trauma. It is not only her inability to love, but also her inability to accept love from others too. That is something that hurts me as her fan.

null

Her gaudy pink jumpsuit is a sight to behold, even though I was strangely hoping for them to add some sparkles on the jumpsuit. That will be a touch too exaggerating, but I felt that it will be amazing because it is so ridiculous. I actually like many of the additional random spirit talk within Kyoko. This comment is a repeat of what I said in Episode 4 but I have never failed to be impressed or chilled by the amusing spirits (now Kyoko even has an angel!) in dialog.

We also get to see the classic scene between the “fight” between Ren and Dicktaro in the middle of the episode (I did not include the details in the summary because it felt a little out of place). I am not sure if the manga readers will agree with me, but I felt that the scene was done in a way to make Dicktaro’s personality even clearer. Moreover, Ren’s reply to him is just comeback classic and it is totally magnificent stuff. That scene is perhaps the best scene in this episode because it clearly represents the two differing personalities of our male protagonists. Dicktaro is obviously an egomaniac dick while Ren is the cool head that never shrinks from a fight.

Lastly, I would like to pose the question: Which character is more detesting to you now? Dicktaro or Ruriko?

Eh, Ruriko. Shoutarou’s a dick, no question, but I think he’s more fun to watch/read, because as much as he tries to act cool, we all know he’s really a giant dork. Fun stuff. *can’t wait for the scenes when he starts fantasizing love scenarios between Ren and Kyouko*

Eee! More Ren-sama! Love it. I’m just too impatient for the “Ren’s Manager” arc!

Personally, I loved seeing Ruriko – bitchy Kawasumi Ayako ftw :-)

And yes, that scene with her mother was shown in the manga.

Amen!!!! mr impz i can’t wait for moar, i hate ruriko with a passion but because she helps develop more kyoko-sama and ren i will see it no matter what ^o^.

I like Ruriko better than Dictaro. She may be a bitch but she helped bring out the best in Kyoko and allowed Kyoko an opportunity to show everyone that she can act.

“Kyoko obviously started to dream of Ruriko as a frail princess.” Hehe obviously :)
Hmm… that’s really tough… Dicktaro or Ruriko? I’m gonna have to say Dicktaro because even though Ruriko is beyond being a spoiled brat, Dicktaro hurt Kyoko more. And because of what will happen with Ruriko in the next ep… (must… resist… spoilage…)
And yes! The ash tray scene with Ren and Sho is CLASSIC! It shows just how cool Ren is and just how egotistical Sho is just from when they first meet. It also shows them their first impressions of each other (must… resist… spoilage…) which is pretty important.
    Oh, I love Kyoko. lol

Ruriko, Shotaro is arrogant, but at least he’s good at his job.

(me shoots Impz with Raven powers) That’s for shameless fanboying a girl like you should not be doing! :D

The thing about these jerks is that they’re just being set up for a fulfilling retribution at the end, unless they experience some life-changing epiphany at some point and become one of the good guys.

It would be interesting also which of the two you want to ‘change’ for the better: Shoutaro or Ruriko?

I liked Shotaro! Ruriko is alright. It’s understandable how her character got twisted to such an extent. And finally a Ren x Kyoko scene!

Dicktaro. It’s even worse to not have your existance acknowledged than to be hated.

@L-chan: Well, don’t you think that Ruriko is such a fake like Dicktaro by seemingly nice to everyone that is on the set. She even tried to trick our Kyoko-sama to think that she is a very nice person that cannot expose herself to the sun. That said, I do blame the innocent and naive Kyoko who keeps veering into fairy land territory.

Yes, there is a need for more Ren because I always find the Ren x Kyoko moments to be the most amazing moments.

@Get: WHAT? IT’S VOICED BY AYAKO? Wow, now i am definitely falling in love with Ruriko. Arr, It was way too early in the manga for me to remember.

@Lucky: Hmm, everyone in the crew manages to develop kyok-sama so it does not feel like a very valid reason. Personally, I think Ruriko did absolutely nothing except to be a total pain in the back for Kyoko. That is why I didn’t feel anything but total hatred for Ruriko in general. She just whines, bitches and complains on every single thing: just like those annoying prima donna.

@Jayers: That, I agree. Despite what I said, she did force Kyoko but anyone could have motivated Kyoko with the “enemy” Ren around.

@Twilight: I actually like the ash tray scene a hell lot because Ren hates Shotaro almost immediately. If anything, Ren remembers the comment that Kyoko made about beating Shotaro, and realizes that this is the absolute bastard that has broken our sweet hime Kyoko-sama’s heart.

Is it just me though but the anime really livens up the part of Dicktaro Vs Ren. In fact, I do not remember the “I actually thought he was a little cool” statement from Dicktaro. If it’s there, fine. If not, it’s a very nice touch.

@Shiro: Both of them are actually pretty good at their job, but Ruriko has a terrible attitude at work. If she is serious, she can probably do a pretty darn good job. She just got complacent because she thinks she is all almighty.

@13sugars: Go die, you silly piglet of moomooland.

@Ghost: I can’t wait for a bigger retribution for Dicktaro though. He needs to have a huge pain. Actually, I will want Ruriko to make a change because it is clear that she is the type of person that was corrupt and complacent due to her influence. Dicktaro’s personality is already rotten to the state that he is a bloody twisted person.

@elva: I need more Ren x Kyoko scenes!

    Need next Ep asap…
Go unleash your uber power Kyoko…
    Ren x Kyoko nods.

That green haired loli is all pumped up with just one Ep of skip beat.
I don’t want to think of what will happen if he watch the whole serie in a single run.

This episode was good, but I was a bit more than disappointed with the lack of flowery backgrounds and sparkles, the manga had. Also, the difference in Ren and Shotaro’s heights were not mentioned before the “fight” which I think makes quite the difference in impact. I think it is very telling of Shotaro’s personality, he knows he’s sort of already lost before he even kicked the rubbish can when he sees Ren’s height and the “relaxed, confident, flowery aura” that surrounded Ren when he first enters the scene. The gentle sparkly smile that Ren gives Shotaro was not executed as well… maybe because the anime didnt actually get the triangular faces quite right? Ren smiling softly at that point in the manga looks pretty good to eat, but for some reason, the impact of his retaliation smile was so-so in the anime.

Shotaro from the start seemed to be a highly arrogant impulsive character and Ruriko is sort of the same. Both know their strengths (Sho – his music, Ruriko – her fairness) and play upto to it well, which makes them too arrogant and therfore act like jerks. Both are tied up in that case, I dont hate one over the other. Personally, I dont see why they should act like that.. the reason they are popular is because the public chooses to pay them that much attention. They should atleast respect that.

    I think the scene with Kyoko’s Mom is included in the manga… the hint of Corn’s appearence changing into Ren is not. I also think it made Ren appear in front of Kyoko in the anime… I think she was facing the opposite direction and only turned her head when he calls out to her in the manga…cant recall correctly ^^;;

Overall, I enjoyed the Godzilla scenes with Ren/Kyoko. There are a lot of flowery/sparkly images that appear in the manga which really pack a punch. So I hope they wont be stingy with those backgrounds. So many animes use them, a few ones here and there in Skip Beat anime should do the trick too. Ren’s sparkly appearence before the fight does kind of create an impact of just how pathetic Sho can get at times.
I really want to see how the next episode turns out to be now! I think the anime is doing a good job of keeping to the manga and this is the point where the manga and characters evolve into sheer awesomeness!!! I dont think we need to worry about Ren/Kyoko scenes… at the rate this is going, there’ll be tons soon.
Anyone knows how many episodes of Skip Beat this season? I’m assuming there will be multiple seasons – there is no way the anime will be able to capture everything so far even with 26 episodes?

*re-reads comment* I think I got a bit carried away with this comment…. I wonder how much of it made sense *sighs*

Even tho Shou’s a total dick, I somehow am oddly attracted to him being in the picture. I find scenes with him adorable. I like Ren, but I also like Shou. I like the Ren X Kyouko pair, but not the Shou X Kyouko pair.

I don’t really Hate Ruriko , but I don’t really like her. So yah. Did that make sense?

Ah yes but I did get a cheap thrill whilst watching Dicktaro revert to Limptaro when he realized he got owned by Ren’s uberawesomeness. Sorry Limptaro, you just don’t compare.

AND the slippery floor scene was soooo much better animated, I nearly died even though I knew exactly what was coming!

  16. Posted November 6, 2008 at 8:37 am | Permalink

@Krebmarkt: Actually, I read the whole manga series in one setting from chapter 1 to 125. I nearly died but it was just way too exciting for me to stop myself after a few chapters.

@Vsky: You sure? I thought that there are quite a lot of flowery backgrounds but you are probably right to say that the sparkles are really lacking. One of Ren’s key methods to annoy the living lights out of Kyoko is through his exttremely sparkly smile that conveys a lot of different feelings.

I think some people generally let their popularity get over their heads. Some people naturally enjoy being the center of attraction, and is not shy to show how much they like to be at the top of the game. Hence, I hardly think that it is anything strange, but I do agree that they are popular because of the people that support them.

Heh, I actually want more Ren x Kyoko scenes because they are always the most interesting interactions other than the Kyoko/moko scenes. I just hope that the flowery background will be used more creatively and frequently to elicit laughter.

I think that the scene between Shotaro and Ren is done well and I think they added quite a few additional frames by their own discretion. Lol, it’s ok to comment with long paragraphs. Make it easier for a conversation no?

@Maura: HAHAHAHA. reallly? Actually, that didn’t really make too much sense but I guess you just mean you are indifferent :P

@Noodles: Cheap thrill? Oh, i am glad that I am not the only one who laughed at such a silly scene. I always laugh at silly scenes… X_X

Ruriko, because her b*****iness was more subtle than Shotaro’s, and there’s nothing I hate more than a b****h who lets her true self slowly seep through the cracks of her façade.
