Forgotten Gifts of Christmas Past: My Gunpla Pile of Shame

No my Christmas was never this awesome, but behold my pile of shame…

Well I have been rather more busy than I anticipated during winter break, given how my unit doesn’t need me until the week after Christmas to help ramp up for inspection I decided to clean out my closet and go over my storage boxes which contained old toys and other stuff. Suffice to say the last time I actually took stock of all the stuff I had in storage was simply never, if I ran out of space it got boxed and put in the garage pile along with all my battle rattle. Turns out despite taking all my old manuals back to work for proper shredding and disposal and setting aside old toys for a gaggle of younger relations I also found a lot of model kits I forgot I even had. One of the things I recall now after taking a longer than expected bus ride (the 9X bus line actually loops into Fisherman’s Wharf now instead of the strip joints and adult stores that I recall seeing back when my grandmother picked me up from elementary school) and going past North Beach where my after school program was that for many years I did get one or two model kits from my uncle in Hong Kong before he emigrated here (to flee from the Red Menace), once in a while my parents bought me a couple too. I was always happy to get them, but at the time I hardly had any time to actually paint each one and each year they got boxed up and were soon forgotten.

I plan on torturing the tiny Jesus Yamato figure, take that Amnesty International!

Well after a couple hours I found my model kit pile to be rather large all things considered though I have more WHFB and WH40K tank kits and infantry. Suffice to say I was sitting on a nerd’s treasure pile that I had inadvertently amassed in over 20 years of existence. I don’t plan on buying any more or asking for any more since my parents would think of them as toys and would give them away to make more space. Given how it was almost like Christmas again I might as post my embarrassingly hefty pile of never built still in box model kits, I call it a pile of shame since my uncle probably wondered where all of the gifts he sent me went once he stepped onto American soil. In all honesty though since many of these came from Hong Kong during the hey days of piracy of everything I bet some of these might be fake, if so kindly point them out if you can. Now what to build first…I am thinking finishing up those no grade ones from Wing first as practice, and then take care of the High Grade stuff. I do plan on melting or immersing in paint thinner Jesus Yamato though.

So anyone else have a Gunpla Pile of shame that they might be working on around this time of year? Lord knows I haven’t finished one of these in years. Man and I was going to ask for Prince Ali’s Custom Enact this year too…yeah I think I should finish my pile of shame first.

Remember when Target carried Gunpla? Ah ye olde days when Wing was king and CN was pimping dubs.

I didn’t even know I had this…but I am not complaining, no sir!

I need more GMs…

Anyone feel the BURNING?

    HGUC GP01! I like!

    Question though, how much work do you put into your kits? (like painting, weathering, etc)

    I actually used to have that Gelgoog Marine, though mine has long since disintegrated.

    As far as new Gunpla go, I recently ordered the MG Hi Nu Gundam (my dream machine!!!!!) and I’m expecting an Avalanche Exia from a friend of mine. Other than that, I’m awaiting some stands I ordered for the Exia and my 1/100 Kyrios.

    @schneider
    I do the full paint scheme and apply at a gloss coat then a matte coat, I haven’t tried weathering yet, but I know how since I did up a few dirty tanks.

    @Changed Name
    Thanks, though I still want a GM Sniper…

    @Myssa Rei
    Gunsou-san does not have college kicking his ass nor do I have a sweet deal TV with Sunrise. I’ll get to them all in good time, I’d like to see if you could do any better. You should see my IG pile of shame…

    @Amuro1X
    Lucky git, I wish I could afford 1:100 scale let alone get some for free…I hate you. :P

    yeah, i remember them days of gunpla in retail shops, in fact i still have my old wing gundam that i bought from toys r’us when i was twelve, and it’s still reasonably in one piece, (even if the head and shield are held on by blutac) anyhoo my pile of shame is so large i’m considering getting a glass display case as i’m running out of space on my desk, and i take the time to paint them where it’s needed.

    it is as follows

    Tieren Space type
    Tieren Taozi
    GN-X

    Mirage C01-GAEA red metal colour ver

    1/100 MG
    Freedom gundam
    Unicorn gundam

    Strike gundam

    as for future purchases i’m already getting the 1/72 VF-25S ozma type for christmas (was also get the alto type but shintokyo didn’t have any in stock so i’ll be getting that one after christmas), and I am planning to get the Sinanju when it comes out.

    i’d put up links to pics but i don’t know how…

    I had a bunch of old dunbine, SDgundam and Wgundam kits that were in storage forever. A few months ago I donated them to the local goodwill.

    I don’t have a Gunpla Pile of Shame, but that’s only because I’m painfully aware that I would have one if I bought any gunpla. I’m a very slow model-maker.

    i am still waiting for 1/144 HG Gundam Astray Blue Frame Secound “series” and a 1/144 HG Gundam Astray Gold Frame Armatu(or how ever you spell it) probably won’t ever happen by the looks of things

    other than that i got a bunch of BB Senshi (i was young once, and don’t ask me how much) a 1/100 Nataku, 1/144 HG Gundam Astray Red Frame… and two broken gundams from the F91 variation series

  14. Posted December 19, 2008 at 7:22 pm | Permalink

    Crusader: I’m not one to talk, as I have, as of typing, the following still on my ‘To-Paint’ queue:

    1 Assault on Black Reach Tactical Squad (10 Marines with sergeant)
    5 Assault on Black Reach Terminator Squad (5 Terminators with sergeant)
    1 Whirlwind
    1 Vindicator
    2 Land Raider chassis (still dithering on making them both Crusaders, or chopping them up to make a Super-Heavy vehicle)
    5 personally-converted Sternguard Veterans

    On the bright side, it should keep me delightfully occupied, and away from any further GW-related spending for the next few months. ;)

    Haesslich: Remember, I work for a major financial institution; we have projections on just how long the world economic doldrums are going to last, and believe me it’ll be a while. Thanks, but I’ll keep my expenditures to the bare minimum. Heck, I even held off getting plastic Drop Pods. Plastic Drop Pods, a Space Marine Player’s dream come true!

    Also, I’ve found that I’m more Codex-adherent (with some deviations) than Non-Codex. So as much as I’d like to cheer on the Sons of Russ, not this quarter. ;)

    Welcome to the Gunpla Fellowship! Glad to have you aboard.

    @ghostlightning
    Lucky git, I wish they still carried those in toy stores, here in the states they have been exiled to hobby shops and the like, and they rarely discount that much on the schwag you got… (goes to hug his HG Gundams)

    @blind_dead_mjcones
    Well some one went hog wild and broke the bacnk recently…as for Gundam 00 I plan on getting mostly grunt suits ans the many mobile suits of Prince Ali. If money allows someday I might get one of the CB Gundams…probably make a diorama out of them though.

    I haven’t found a local retailer that carries much of the Frontier stuff yet, considering the value of the dollar I might not get my Macross Frontier, kits, for some time… T_T

    @Potatochobit
    I hope some one could use them, it was for a good cause nonetheless.

    @IKnight
    How do you know you are a slow modeler if you haven’t even bought one yet? perhaps the proper Gundam will impart to you the proper motivation.

    @Tenryu
    Are the broken ones beyond repair? I know a few tricks on fixing models given how my war gaming habit has taught me how to make repairs of varying complexity.

    @elvadrieng
    Depends on the kind of paint you plan on using or if you want to use those Gundam Markers.

    yeah, as a result of buying them over the course of a year i’m very poor (no change there then, considering i used to by lots of WH40K stuff)but hey, just following what the australian government says, which is spend up to avoid recession.

    i’ll give a bit of advanced warning regarding the flag and enact models, they tend to be difficult to pose due to them being top heavy and having limited articulation in the ankles (the flag suffers from these problems more than the enact) the arms can pop out of the sockets if you move them too far in one direction, and the flags hands can’t grip the sonic blade at all, it just slips though.
    that said the ground type tierens would make awesome looking IG sentinels.

    your not alone in regards to the VF-25 models, they have been nigh impossible to find anywhere as they sell out so quickly.

    @elvadrieng
    if your going to paint it, i recommend using the paints GW sell for their WH and WH40K stuff,

    @crusader: i broke them when i first finish ‘building’ them. and that was like 13 years ago(i was young and i was at HK) that and i think i threw it away when i had a clean out some months ago… thnx for the offer though

    Crusader: since I saw the catalogue of upcoming items in October, I resolved to avoid stepping into any Games Workshop stores. Regular hobby and gaming stores may carry the models and books, but I don’t feel compelled to buy GW stuff on those. Diing so has saved me $200 easily, so far – I haven’t seen the inside of a GW store in months.

    Myssa: By book, I meant a new Spqce Wolves codex would break your resolve.

    @blind_dead_mcjones
    Thanks for the advanced warning on the Flag and Enact, what army did you play back in then if you don’t mind me asking?

    Sadly 1:144 scale is still too large to fit onto large round base…

    Still I continue to hunt for a VF-25, it’s so good looking its worth the effort, if only they were as common as Gundam Kits.

    @Tenryu
    Sorry to hear that, well better luck next time.

    @Haesslich
    Locally there are no more GW retail stores, but since I do go to my local game shop for games with the gaming group, it’s hard sometimes. Heck I just bought some bits because sales were slow…

  23. Posted December 20, 2008 at 8:11 pm | Permalink

    Wow that Valkyrie model looks especially cool. Alright well then, I’m never going to doubt your Gundam fandom again…….

    Anyway I believe between me and one of my friends who is also a mecha fan we’ve got a perfect grade Zaku and Gundam, a high grade Gundam Virtue, an MSiA Gundam Spiegel and God Gundam and 12 mini figurines including the Zeta Gundam, Super Gundam, Rick Dias, Hambrabi, The O, Palas Athene, Bound Doc, Quebeley, SD Gundam (riding on the G Sky), an SD Zaku and a Gelgoog. That’s just Gundam gunpla of course as there’s also the High Grade L-Gaim and Dunbine that are still in the boxes.

    your welcome, and i used to play imperial fists (2 tactical suqads, bike squad with attack bike, veterans, assault marines, captain, emperors champion, 2 dreadnoughts, land raider, 2 rhinos (affectionately nicknamed the taxi cabs), predator, and a whirlwind) I still have most of them (had to sell the assault marines, a rhino, dreadnoughts and veterans for cash) but they’re occupying boxes mostly, there’s also the beginnings of a imperial guard army (4 squads, heavy weapon teams, and 2 leman russ tanks, all the new cadian plastics, was gonna make them look like the helghast from killzone) biel-tan eldar (guardians, dire avengers, howling banshees, farseer, avatar, wraithlord, and a falcon) plus there’s a couple of tau firewarror squads and a devilfish on my desk somewhere, tis such a shame to have them not be used, but i don’t really feel the drive i used to (plus some of the adelaide players have a tendency to be somewhat ‘beardy’ which ruined it for me) though the events which led to the sargeant of my first tactical squad becoming a captain still bring a smile to my face when i think back on it.

    man maybe i should get back into it or something

    they don’t fit? thats a shame, oh well, would’ve still been cool though

    @Kaioshin
    Don’t you ever doubt my love for UC ever again. Gundam 00 is another thing, but how did you agree to share your gunpla? I put way more work into mine than necessary so I am much more prone to jealously guard mine.

    @blind_dead_mcjones
    I am putting Carapace onto my Cadians so I know how it feels to spend time to get it just right. The Helghast idea sounds fun thought I am not advanced enough to start making anything other than plates. I am lucky enough to have a gaming group that has a beardy and casual clique so its not so bad. I know the feeling though when you can only play a certain segment of players. Ig you do get back into it who knows maybe you will find other players to you liking. Moreover 5th Edition is much more objective based than it was before and it penalizes min maxers by making troops choices the only ones who can claim objectives.

    The large round base makes for a very tight fit, and since LoS is based on model size and from model’s eye view it’s going to be hard finding cover for 1:144 scale models.

    Imperial Fists have some neat characters in the latest Codex, right now the metgame still has Marines as the army to beat.
