It's a New Year and I Already Got Robbed…

So yeah I need to upgrade my apartment security to something like this…

So while the Israelis and Palestinians were bringing in the New Year with a bang to say the least, found to my mild amusement that I had the wondrous experience of being robbed. Thankfully the thieves who broke in were very polite in putting back their point of entry back together. While the local police can’t be bothered on the weekend so a full police report will have to wait, taking a short inventory of what was actually stolen I am surprised that the list is very short considering they could have walked away with a lot more. I confess this is an odd way to mark my first post of 2009, but being nuts and cynical I admit I am pleasantly surprised that all things considered me and my room mate got off easy.

Indeed…The thieves took Psychonauts but not Metal Slug, I guess they had taste.

Short list of what the gentleman thieves took were one Xbox 360 Launch Unit, Call of Duty 4, a sweater, three textbooks (out of date), a pair of shoes, $5 in quarters, and here’s the kicker Psychonauts. What they failed to take were two check books, my CPU, and five externals, my LCD Monitor, my speaker system, a shit ton of manga, almost my entire painted portion of my Tau Army, LOTR Army, half of my BFG fleet, High Elf Army, my entire figure collection, the alcohol I had left, all of my SHnY CDs, anything from the pantry, 5 paintball guns, and Metal Slug. I am not sure if the thieves were just being polite or what ever but seeing as how they tried to pull one of the externals I suppose my policy of wire tying every cable (though I confess the tangle of wires is still daunting) to the desk made for a more aggravating proposition to the point they left my CPU and external hard drives alone. Otherwise I suppose they weren’t into animu or war gaming considering my books on military history were left behind. While my roommate lost all his laundry money, because I was too lazy to peel off the label on my change jar it was completely over looked.

All in all it could have been much worse than it was given that there was a spate of break-ins at the apartment complex during the break. Still I am pleasantly surprised that all they really walked away with was a Xbox 360 Launch Unit that will be RRoDed sometime this year losing four wireless controllers is a bit of a bummer but one was already broken. The bothersome part is mostly filing the police report, and then having to tell the secret squirrel society (OPSEC) guys that thieves might have taken a look at some personal military documents (nothing important really old sets of orders for the most part). Considering how bad it could have been I am a bit glad all the most significant item they took was a 360 Launch Unit. I suppose if they were hardcore enough to take Psyconauts but leave Metal Slug behind that in the end my apartment was hardly worth breaking into, considering how obvious it would have been for them to discover to their utter horror that it was a Launch Unit and not a Zephyr or Jasper build 360. It sucks that we were robbed, but in the end it’s mildly amusing they only took so little and had the courtesy of putting the window back into place. Considering how we had window locks and only maintenance guys and veteran thieves could have known how to pop the windows open I suppose if that is all they took that we were in a sense a waste of time.

What else can you do really?

    So let me get this straight, they took an Xbox toy but did not look for expensive jewelry or stash of money or other valuable? Teenagers – Even as robbers they are idiots.

    “three textbooks (out of date)” – that’s something interesting.
    That’s something for the mood Dancing Kakadu

    Well, as I said earlier in YIM, it’s a good thing that they only stole some rather inconsequential items that can be replaced rather easily. If they took out your expensive stash, you will be pretty darn screwed. I guess that is the good thing among the bad shit that you got robbed.

    It really can be worst, these happened to me a year ago and they took my passport, my bankbooks, all my CDs/DVDs, my PS3 and other minor stuff. They escaped before they got the chance of take my CPU and Flat TV on their car. So, I guess that It was not so bad after all, but the passport and the bankbooks was a real pain.

    lol, thanks for the laugh.

    in any case, sorry for your fortunate misfortune.

    I suppose them taking your old textbooks could be considered vigilante housekeeping? WIN.

    What do you mean they stole little? They stole A LOT.

    Last Valentine’s Day, my house was invaded and robbed in the middle of a thunderstorm (EPIC) and I had to chase the thief with a pair of giant kitchen knives.

    All they got was maybe a piece of jewelery of my parents’.

    Seriously, thieves just piss me off. The event may have traumatized me a little too. I’m actually looking to get firearms and maybe shooting em down next time. Dammit. Now I’m pissed.

    That blows, but like you said, could have been much worse. Personally, the worst thing that will come out of it is the feeling that your “home” isn’t as safe as it felt before. To me that’s the worst thing, as home is where you go to forget the worries of work and the outside world.

    But on the bright side, maybe you’re getting all the crap stuff of the new year out of the way and this is be the low point of the new year.

    I really bet the thieves were more scared than you…LOL.

    I’ve never been robbed, and I think it’s impossible to rob my house. I live in a flat, and the doors were specially done for this stuff, they can even protect me from bullets! lol

    Damn, that sucks. Glad to hear your more important stuff were left untouched, though–I’ve been mugged before, but I’m sure your robbery’s on another scale of loss altogether. Hope those bastards get caught. With such a stupid pattern of looting, you never know…

    That reminds me of the one time where thieves broke into our house many moons ago while i was on summer vacation with my family.It seems that they didnt find anything to their like.They took away NOTHING and just destroyed some military plastic models i was building back then.

    Sorry to hear. It sounds like they took things they could pawn/sell off easily – computer parts all have serials and I think between carrying it out and selling it, it’s just more difficult. Hopefully, your landlord can get some better locks or set up other deterrents for thieves.

    Sorry to hear about that man, but like everyone else has said, at least you didn’t lose anything too important. I remember when my dad’s laptop and stash of two dollar bills was stolen from our garage in broad day light. The mystery is how could anyone not notice (I was away at the time).

    I’ve no doubt you’ll bounce back strong. What’s important is that you are safe. Take care.

  26. Posted January 4, 2009 at 3:49 pm | Permalink

    Um, sounds like your robber was a big dork. Could this have been an inside job? Do you have the X-box controller, because I read a Kotaku article where the 360 owner used the controller to basically guide him to the thief. If this robber doesn’t live around your place, then no luck. Worth a try though, right.

    I guess you really did get off lucky far as this break-in’s concerned. It could have been a lot more disastrous. Still, sorry to hear about this, Crusader.

    I got a bunch of 360 games taken when I left them in my dorm over winter break two years ago, but that is the extent of my experiences with theft.

    Also, you did not get robbed. Neither violence, nor the threat thereof, were utilized.

    You can call yourself lucky, I’ve had worse experiences with thievery. Just make sure it doesn’t happen again, small security measures go a long way.

  34. Posted January 5, 2009 at 3:45 am | Permalink

    @schneider
    Yeah I am surprised my penchant for wire tying things might have actually done some real good for a change.

    @lubczyk
    I am sure they merely glanced at what was out in the open considering much of the place was undisturbed. I suppose they might have been in a hurry as other apartments were also hit on the same week.

    @lilu
    I guess they thought the text books could be sold off for some decent amount of money…seeing as I could not get a good price I think they might have fared similarly.

    @Impz
    Yeah though the only thing I really kept of any value were my checks and my computer. Seeing as how they did not take any of the checks I suppose telling my bank about it will minimize potential damage.

    @Pyoro
    I was mostly amused that they had taste in games…

    Yeah I am a proud owner of a Tau Army, mostly painted too, it’s loss would have soured me greatly.

    @mareo
    Ouch, fortunately in my case most of my important things were taken with me.

    @lelangir
    I suppose one could call it that, though seeing as how i could not sell those off I doubt the thieves would have done any better. Unless they needed them for their classes.

    @Stripey
    I think they were overwhelmed by the sheer amount of nerd emanating from my desk, they even pooped a figure case thinking that it might have held a pistol… They were sore disappointed of course. ;)

    @animekritik
    We have already asked around, and plan on filing the police report in a few hours. At this point its beyond funny if it were a prank…

    @Myu
    My Passport is in my parent’s safe along with the zombie invasion kit. As for my credit cards I follow Military policy on them, it’s stapled to my ass. ;)

    @Shippoyasha
    Well I guess I am fortunate my experience was not nearly as interesting, though In all honesty I am glad I did not get cleaned out.

    @Square
    It’s only a dorm and not my home, my home actually has a security system. Otherwise I try to keep as little as possible here considering how it’s fairly small and all.

    Suffice to say this is already an interesting year…

    @sacchi
    No fortress is impregnable, besides it pays to be cautious and paranoid.

    @usagijen
    Hehe, thanks usagijen, Like I said I was very much amused that they were awfully polite to put back the window and not make a huge mess out of everything and took relatively little.

    @Owen S
    You know for once I take comfort in human stupidity, it could have been much worse. I think the key to not getting mugged is to not look like you have much money on you, more over carry pepper spray or if state laws allow a taser.

    @Blowfish
    Ouch looks like your thieves decided to voice their frustration at having nothing worth stealing. Sadly we never got renter’s insurance despite fortifying the place. We only discovered how they were able to do it after the robbery.

    @Eirias
    Perhaps, I just hope there’s not going to be a sequel. You are right though it seems I was not robbed but my apartment was burglarized.

    @Caitlin
    The Complex owners are miserly as hell we might get new locks but as for the windows…well I hold little hope for that. Though you are right at a glance my CPU is ugly since the CD and DVD drives are old and its a dual core and not a quad core. PCs get obsolete quick I suppose.

    @Shokkeru
    Yeah I take my laptop when I leave my CPU behind, so I guess that was a plus for me. 2$ bills? Haven’t seen those in a long time.

    @TJ
    Well at least it was only a launch unit so they can enjoy the noise and the RRoD.

    @Baka-Raptor
    Well sorry for having shit taste in games, though oddly enough they did not take the PC Games.

    @TheBigN
    Yeah They weren’t taken, I guess they were not into animu.

    @Cherubium
    Well I suppose getting nothing for the text books will bite them in the ass. Still if the 360 bricks on them that would be something I would like to see…

    @ghostlightning
    Most of my Gunpla are at home, I thinkit was the sheer amount of nerd that put them off. I guess my safety is something I can be greatful for thought most thieves know that the best time to go through a house is when now one is around, hence why they struck on the week of Christmas.

    @Yotaru Vegeta
    It was probably an pro on the go considering only things that were in the open were taken. They snagged all the controllers so that avenue is shut. Still the whole complex was hit and so far no broken windows or noting may be it was an out of work handy man or a former resident who knew the windows were shitty.

    @Dorian Cornelius Jasper
    Thanks, like i said it sucks that were got stuff stolen, but we came off lucky if nothing else. Besides 360 is cheaper anyway and it was a lanch unit…the controllers were the only real gripe to be honest.

    @TheAndySan
    If the thieves didn’t leave behind metal slug it might not have been so amusing, since they were some very particular thieves I guess there was an amusing aspect to it.

    @13sugars
    I am sure a loli-trap would make for a terrifying security system. ;)

    @Ominae
    Hey it’s better than some window locks…

    @Pablo-kun
    We had window locks and everything, though in the end it was quite shocking to learn how the windows could be popped out easily. Still I guess some other measures can be instituted…

    Dear lod. Now you remind me. It’s really sad but it’s true. Now whenever I look at the door the thief barged in, I get a bit of a head rush. Maybe I’m a bit more violent in response to things, maybe I look at the eyes of people around me, I’m always scared whenever I wake up (since that’s the time the thief had the chance to smash in the door).

    For about half a year after that, I seriously wanted to hurt people, anyone who could stand in as that thief. I have enough little life troubles beyond it (since I’m a real life hikkikomori of sorts). If I didn’t have my hobbies and my family, things could’ve ended way worse. I felt pretty suicidal after it for a while too. And a lot of crap happening in the following months due to a lot of pent up tension. I’m really ready to move on after 2008. Obama victory, Street Fighter 4, Resident Evil 5, new anime. Bring it on, baby.

    That kind of sucks that you got robbed at the turn of a new year, but you probably are fortunate that most of the stuff were manga and tangled wires for the externals. Maybe they thought that you were some anime weirdo and I wonder what their reaction would be if they broke into a place completely full of figurines and everything. If I were you, though, I’d go on a personal vendetta to find them and beat the absolute shit out of them for stealing Call of Duty 4, the best FPS I’ve played so far ever… :D

    “Keep calm and carry on.” Exactly. Yes, the most important thing is that you feel safe at home to do your secret business, but this should be nothing to a person like you. Fuck ‘08 in its entirety except for the Olympics, I’m looking forward to the return of 24, and other shows like “Lie to me”, and I hope you have Shangri-La on your radar for April, by Range Murata

    Dang that sucks. Remember to have trap shotguns next time and a video recorder so you can track them down and use that new sharpened machete. As for the 360, I’m amazed it lasted that long. My launch 360 conked out late last year and it took me two months to replace it due to the wonders of Microsoft Customer Support.
