Maria+Holic, Episode 12 (END)- I Think I've Had Dreams Like This

And so unfortunately we must draw this chapter of Maria+Holic to an end. But what a splendid end it was, complete with school swimsuits, loincloths, exposed breasts, and perverted dreams. What more could you ask for?

What a wonderful decision to make the swimsuit episode the very last episode. It makes all the waiting well worth it, and creates a superb sendoff. If only actual schools had such rules for swimsuits as Kanako dreams it. My high school didn’t have swimming classes, hell we didn’t even have a pool. All I remember is running in circles a lot…

I’ve definitely had dreams like this before

Don’t know if I want…

I remember when PE got rained out in my high school they made us go inside the gym and play kickball or run in circles around the gym. God I hated that crap, they never let us play basketball for some cruel reason. And basketball was like the one sport I was good at.

Wow, how cruel. Regardless it was a good way to end the season, to make sure that we get one last prank played on Kanako by Mariya and Matsurika. Mariya didn’t have a whole lot of screentime, so I’ll have to review previous episodes to get my fix.

Only commies wear red loincloths

Simply…amazing. Such gifts the producers have given us in this final episode. I’ll even allow it despite the lack of trap, because Shizu is pretty delicious too. Obviously, because they are twins~ Not that I thought Mariya was actually going to be exposed.

I don’t think any of us really watched this for the story, but how harsh to end the season on such a note. Damn you Shinbo! Well, here’s hoping for a second season, as I am mildly curious as to what the connection is, as well as wanting more of this delicious series.

Final Impressions:
I knew right from the season preview that this was going to be a winner: it had a trap, a lesbian, and a maid. I was not disappointed in the least, and the show was able to provide a constant stream of comedy and great characters. I’ll go into more detail on the characters in a day or two when I do my poll wrap-up post, but suffice it to say I’m in love with Mariya and Kanako. Mariya because he’s a delicious trap, and Kanako because she’s so very much like me. The back and forth between Kanako, Mariya, and Matsurika created the best humor in the show, but the other characters maintained an ability to carry themselves as well.

From the wickedly awesome OP to the exaggerated nosebleeds, Maria+Holic rarely wandered off course. It kept it’s eye on the ball and kept doing what it was good at: providing comedy. The sidetracks to drama were small and thankfully they didn’t feel the need to make up some stupid melodrama to end the season like so many comedies feel the need to do. I hope that at some point they decide to make a second season, I would be quite pleased. Final Score: 9

Crusader’s Adroation of Kanako

Indeed long have I waited to see this day.

Down at an English fair,
One evening I was there,
When I heard Miss Kanako shouting
Underneath the flare:

Hoi’ve got a lo-ve-ly bunch o’ coconuts.
There they are a-standin’ in a row.

Finally the last ep of Maria+holic, the finale was quite satisfying as Kanako’s dream was 12 kinds of win and awesome. Kanako ought to go into fashion she sure has the creative talent to makes some wondrous swim wear. Who needs reality when Kanako’s dreams are so vivd and detailed? Certainly it was as good as real when it came to the CPR dispute. As usual the citizens of Kanako’s Yuri Republic looked dashing. Sadly t was not to be in what passes for reality as Kanako underwent many trials but in the end was rewarded by byt the Virgin Mary with one final pool meet. While Mariya tried to sabotage Kanako, Sachi delivered President Kanako a glorious victory when Shizu experienced a wardrobe malfunction. I like how Kanako sought to aggressively end the Mariya tyranny over her life and it seems that Shizu is fully behind President Kanako as Shizu was un-phased by Kanako’s preemptive strike; by all accounts it was indeed shock and awe. Words cannot convey the glory of this finale.

Big ones,

small ones,

some as big as yer ‘ead!

Final Thoughts:

I agree with Calawain the lack of forced drama was a wise decision and bearing witness to Kanako’s prodigious and legendary imagination and capacity for detailed fantasy was a delight from start to finish. Mariya was deliciously evil through out and perhaps one day we can finally see the fruit of President Kanako’s labor now that Yuzuru, Honoka, and Kiri seem to be willing servants of the Yuri Republic. Such a shame we could not see Kanako and Shizu BE FRIENDLY but another time perhaps, maybe then Sachi will make her move as she was displeased at the idea that Kanako had gone hetero on us. While Kanako did not level up to Chikane class it was more than compensated for with her powers of imagination that rivaled Hosaka. Even if it wasn’t deep it was at least a fun ride and something that I looked forward to every week and there were moments that had me in stitches. Final Grade: A-

Give ‘em a twist, a flick o’ the wrist,
That’s what Miss Kanako said.

Hoi’ve got a lo-ve-ly bunch o’ coconuts.
Hevery ball yer throw will make me rich.

There stands me wife, the idol of me life,
Singin’ “roll a-bowl a ball, a penny a pitch!

Singin’ roll a-bowl a ball, a penny a pitch!
Singin’ roll a-bowl a ball, a penny a pitch!
Roll a-bowl a ball, roll a-bowl a boll, singin’ roll a-bowl a ball a penny a pitch!

I’ve got a lo-ve-ly bunch of coconuts (They’re lovely!)
There they are a standing in a row.
(One, two, three, four)

Big ones, small ones, some as big as your head
(And bigger)

Give ‘em a twist, a flick of the wrist, thats what Miss Kanako said.

Now that hoi’ve got a lo-ve-ly bunch of coconuts.
(La-da-de-da-da)
Hevery ball you throw will make me rich.
(Have a banana)

There stands me wife, the idol of me life,
Singin’ roll a-bowl a ball, a penny a pitch!

All together now!
Singin’ roll a-bowl a ball, a penny a pitch!

Harmony!

Singin’ roll a-bowl a ball, a penny a pitch!

Roll a-bowl a ball, roll a-bowl a ball, singin’ roll a-bowl a ball, a penny a pitch.

Singin’ roll a-bowl a ball, a penny a pitch!

Sachi was tasked with filling out a Presidential Order…

It was executed perfectly…

The results…were…

Well it turns out it was a case of blue on blue…

President Kanako made a public apology…

And all was forgiven as Kanako would take responsiblity for ruining Shizu for marriage.

Kanako dyed the entire universe red with her nose bleed… There isn’t a more appropriate ending than that.

Dear Mother up in Heaven, please come back with a second season.

I truly loved every second. The fantasy swimsuits, fantasy swim coach, and fantasy CPR were all splendid.

Priest Kanae took more action than dialogue in which increased his chances for better appreciation by us, viewers.

As we say farewell to our TRAPtastic anime, we can thank God for not letting ourselves have intense nosebleeds like Kanako. If we did, we would be in the hospital with only crummy channels to watch.

I PREFER LOINCLOTHS THAN SWIMSUITS! The Yuri Republic will never approve, but maybe a few might. ^^

I am slightly confused with this show, to be honest. Don’t get me wrong – I enjoyed the comedy and Kanako’s internal monologues.

But the other lead character, Mariya, who is so much more awesome, is simply reduced to a pure tsukkomi role, just like her sidekick Matsurika. Both of them perform excellently as a sarcastic jibe on Kanako, but they have the potential to do so much more.

Pithy words indeed… Mariya will be back in a bigger role… much bigger role (I can only hope) otherwise… storywise… it was pretty slow moving and empty for me..

Yes, I think it was emptyy as well. I was kind of hoping somehow kanako anded up with Mariya. It just seemed fitting however much her fear of men was.

Easily the best anime this season ; the plot wasn’t bad, but what can you do in 12 episodes anyway ?

OMG Tchaikovsky sindrom … :D … Shortly said, best anime comedy I’ve ever seen so far. There were many misterious things and many of them were never explained ,example is the ending ><. Anyway I didn’t like Mariya and her maid so much, they were just too bigheaded. But that stuff with hypnosis was brilliant. So what say… just hope for new season and President Kanako rulez :D .

Well sadly, I only watched Maria Holic for its laugh and art. But I’ll also look forward to a second season! And hopefully explore more of the characters’ relationship than deriving mere comedy out of these characters.

I bet the male viewers of Maria Holic didn’t want to see the priest in a loincloth but I certainly was curious enough. XD
I really do hope they have a second season! Even if they bring in drama or whatever, I’ll watch it because it’s Maria Holic. But just comedy would be okay too. =3

    QUESTION:

Recently, I’ve just started Maria+Holic and have been skipping around episodes and watching out of order. So I was wondering, what episode is the scene in episode 12 at 0:08 where Matsurika is trying to put on a corset on Mariya?

Well, because the anime seemed to be following the manga down to the last line, I feel a little disappointed. The real plot of the story seemed to begin on episode 12, the last episode, and so I guess it will take a while for scanlators to update this far. Yes the anime was funny but…none of the characters grew. Nothing was accomplished. Nobody except Miriya and her maid seemed to know of Kanako’s true self and they only abused it for comedy. Nothing big happened.
This was kinda like one of those shows where the main character could throw a fit and hate all her friends in one ep and in the next it’s all normal again. Please tell me they will make a season two so that the one real cliffhanger they had could be explained. XD

I read the plot and thought there would be romance. Not that I’m TOTALLY opposed to yuri, but I watched because it was a guy… oh well. Seemed like it was all comic relief… how lame. They should advertise it more clearly.

XD I was so mad at the ending but I really loved the series and usually I don’t watch things like this. In the end I love this series and will probably end up reading the manga hopefully there will be a conclusion. By the way I love the coconuts song XD

Damnit though, horrible ending. I thought itd have a bit more at the end, but all I got was “That pendant–!” END. *facedesk* At least I got another Dispair reference on the end episode, but really, this series should have gone to at least 20 episodes.. too much time spent on man`ako drawings? At least a sappy timeskip to when Mariya gets to be boyish and rules teh skool or something… D| Great anime for 11 episodes though.
