Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Episode 8- Metal Combat

fmamain

I haven’t dropped it yet! Two weeks ago I was out of town for a few days, and last weekend I was studying for finals (plus the episode was dull) so I skipped them. I’ve also started work on the summer anime preview, so there’s always that to anticipate sometime soon.

I was rather looking forward to this episode, as I remember that the fights with these guys were particularly entertaining the first time around. I was generally pleased with how they treated it this time, albeit with a few too many speedlines for my tastes. Although Slicer the Homicide is an awfully stupid sounding name.

fma-02

This guy’s story reminded me of Johnny Depp’s character in Sweeny Todd who was a barber who kills people sitting on his trap barber’s chair with his shaving knife. The dead are then dropped down and turned into meat pies in the basement. Not exactly the same, but that’s just went through my disturbed mind (Mr. Todd was certainly scarier, he sung).

Oh man, the awkward gags again…

fma-05
That looked painful

fma-06

The “am I a doll” storyline is necessary for character development I know, but I still don’t particularly like it. Less emo, more fightan~!

Now Kimbley, he’s one crazy ass freak too. Plus, Hiroyuki Yoshino (Allelujah, Gundam 00) does a great crazy guy voice. I always found that turning stuff into bombs was a rediculously awesome alchemy power, one of my favorites in the show by far. And, I think this show has a rather high ratio of mentally unstable individuals making up its cast of characters. Keeps it interesting, but often creeps you out.

    Hallelujah as Kimblee… how appropriate.

I love Barry’s mantra: “I kill, therefore I am”. That’s the only FMA quote I remember lol.

yeah im definately not into the al angst thats coming next week, hopefully they only spend like 5 more minutes on it, I mean in the manga and in the first series they were really both non issues, and thsi series could have definately been left without it, I mean if the manga had used that as a plot twist saying that al was a fake al or something then it would have been useful, but it went nowhere and I was like “wtf”? Why waste a couple chapters/episodes on somethign that went nowhere?

can’t they fight and talk at the same time. bereft morons really think in a situation when lives are at stake they’re going to have minute to spare to sit down set up tea and discuss the meaning of life?
    awesome fighting sequences though :D

Ed’s arm breaking was so much fun. Also, great background music during Envy’s and Lust’s entrance.

Listening the japanese when they’re mentioning Slicer and the inbetween bits of the commercial, I think that actual translation should be ‘Slicer the Murderer’ or ‘the murderer Slicer’.

But I don’t translate at all, this is just what I think. Great ep though.

Hahaha loved the scene where barry was explaining his story to Alphonse. What I love about FMA is how they mix humor well with all the drama and the action. Almost all episodes so far have a good balance. Btw, here’s my own review of the ep: http://www.waukster.com/full-metal-alchemist-brotherhood-episode-8/

    Cheers everyone!

As happy as I am you guys are blogging this show. It saddens me the lack of love Sengoku Basara is getting. Only 12 episodes long and yet the sheer epic GAR-ness is putting to shame other animes ten times longer. I won’t spoil it, but look up the trailers if you’re interested. It will make you weak in the knees from awesome. Even the other Three Kingdoms anime can’t compare.

As far as this episode goes, finally! We’re getting into the good manga material. And this fight was greatly improved over the previous anime adaption. Definitely looking forward to what comes next.

Yay! Kimbly-san has finally entered the show!!! :3
I do not know what you people’s problem is, you people that complain about the gags. For the love of the Almighty, you don’t have to watch the show if you don’t like it! *angry face*

I really don’t think this is a shit show. One of the problems it is suffering from right now is that the content is nothing new, despite the different angle they approach it from. I admit that there are a lot of ill timed gags, and it does seem like they are holding back their budget. I think once they start getting into the stuff the first series didn’t cover that BONES will start to get into it more. My biggest problem right now with the new series is how rushed it all feels, but with 51 episodes to fit it all into I guess I can understand the hurry to get to new content.

After typing that, I guess it does suffer from some serious flaws, but the fights have been good, and I guess I am just waiting for them to get done rushing through what they have already done.

Edit: sorry excalibaa1! , I really misread that. I am gonna go and try to get my illiteracy fixed now.

I don’t get why people are complaining about the animation so much. I dug out the 1st anime adaptation to watch along with this one, and that one’s animation is the one getting hard on the eyes once I watched the new version.

And the manga had its own share of gags and chibis. I don’t remember people complaining then.

(Although the Nina arc had a much greater emotional impact on me in series 1 than both the manga and Brotherhood.)

It isn’t the animation itself that bothers me. I quite enjoy it. Maybe I am just looking for it, but I have noticed a lot of scenes where they will talk but use various ways not to animate them actually talking therefore saving on their budget.

Agreed about the “am I a doll?” micro-arc thing. Never much cared for it, something about it doesn’t seem to fit in well with everything else.

Since I’ve been watching FMA for some time now, I do know some facts that are rather interesting to know about the show. I’ll tell you one that really surprised me.

This unknown fun fact is that originally, Ed’s name was not “the Fullmetal alchemist”, but in fact “the alchemist of steel”. I found fullmetal sounds way cooler on the otherhand though, so i’m glad they changed it.

I do have a problem though. I was wondering if in fact Alphonse joined the state alchemists’ society, what would be his could name? The Armor Alchemist? That one fits well I find. Or maybe not. Anyways tell me a good name please, I’d love to know what it would be!
