Canaan, Episode 2- The Canaan Identity

canaanmain2

With Crusader out doing his soldier’s duties for a week, I will be stepping in to comment on this week’s episode of Canaan. I hope this entry’s title reference isn’t lost on our otaku readers, but I was pleasantly surprised by the multiple action scenes this week. You’d think it was a Hollywood flick with all of the car chases, explosions, and gunfire. But then the flat chested protagonist who kicks ass with super-powered eyes reminds us that this is Type-Moon and not Hollywood.

canaan2-01

Alright, who didn’t see this rescue coming from a mile away? A bit heavy on the really transparent foreshadowing by conversation… Obviously its those incompetent American spec ops/mercs/etc., right Japan!

canaan2-02

Not only Engrish, but standing up next to a very explodable vehicle in the open shooting at a helicopter with just a rifle! (hint, use the terrain for cover) Regardless, good quality action just like last week. PA apparently has both the budget and the ability to keep up high quality action scenes for long periods of time. I’m very impressed by the effort so far, it’s rare to see a non-Sunrise show be like this (movies/OVAs notwithstanding).

I hate amnesia plot devices. How lazy do you have to be?

canaan2-04
Jealous because she’s hotter and seems to enjoy life more than you?

canaan2-05
Context everyone!

canaan2-06

Whoa, it’s not every day that you see a car chase in anime. Are you sure Matt Damon isn’t hiding somewhere? I think the most amusing car chase I have ever seen in a movie was from The Bourne Ultimatum. The sheer ridiculousness of attempting a car chase in midtown Manhattan was something else. Needless to say, both Matt Damon’s and his pursuer’s vehicles were thoroughly trashed by the end.

canaan2-07
Pop idols are not exactly what I would consider car chase music…

canaan2-08
Jouji Nakata has such a manly, badass voice.

canaan2-09

Oh man, yet another action scene. That was one crazy old man, although I am quite curious as to how an elderly fellow like that gets called “onii-chan” by the young man he was with. One assumes it has something to do with viruses and birthmarks, but who knows.

canaan2-10
Hello titties, I mean kitty?

canaan2-11

This is definitely a show I’d like to see on Blu-Ray. I have yet to buy any anime on BR to complement my action movie collection, but I certainly plan on at least trying out Sword of the Stranger. This is definitely a candidate for R1 licensing considering the action focus of the show, and previous success with Type-Moon works. Crusader may be gone again next week, so its possible that you’ll be stuck with me for episode 3 as well, we shall see.

While I am enjoying the action scenes so far, I hope the plot becomes more manageable soon. I’ve enjoyed all the Type-Moon anime I’ve watched so far – Lunar Princess, The Garden of Sinners, Fate/Stay Night, but this seems really really hectic for even a Type-Moon series.

    CRAZY AWESHUM MANLY TAXI…

Lovable ditz Maria belongs to Canaan and Canaan alone, harm her and face the wrath of the sugar stick chewing Gun Kata Pucelle of the Tetra-Grammaton…

Onee-con Gin-sama… *hit by airsoft pellet* I mean Liang Qi continues her S&M games while her Onee-sama shows some skin (and a familiar looking tattoo).

    One final word: NYAA!!!

I like how they are developing the plot. It makes sense to keep us in the dark. When the story primarily is around those who don’t know much at all…

I am so buying this on Blue Ray, Amazing animation.. So much fun to watch, they got me hooked with the car chase scene. I love car chases, from Blues Brothers, to the Matrix 2, and the Bourne Movies.. Not to mention, Smokey and bandit, so much fun…

I see Canaan will have her work cut out for her when she takes on Alphard onee-sama. Liang Qi is most pitiable that her efforts to get Alphard’s attention were in vain. Still her love of airsoft is only a plus.

Even if the mooks died in droves the taxi driver alone more than made up for it. Even if the Old Man died he was still kick ass, when I turn 90 something I want to be just like him.

I hope the folks at PA Works keep it up, certainly it seems as one of the new kids on the studio block they can give the best a good run.

@Crusader: I hope you don’t mean “going out like a punk” when you wish to be like crazy old man in your dotage, if his mini-Uzi shots can be deflected by a laundry pole, I don’t think knives would do anything to Canaan either.

Cummings is apparently, the new Pig of Capitalism, useful henchman to Alphard, and chew-toy for delicious Liang Qi.

The car chase was really good for anime, I was expecting a Taxi-like scene when MANLY CABBIE GEORGE ran out of overpass (and damn did I get it). Next chase scene better damn well include Minis and Vespas…

Two episodes in and not a single “Nyaa” from Hakko/Noto? HOW DOES SHE MAKE A LIVING???

    @Kherubim
What the odds of meeting some one like Canaan anyway? There aren’t many options for the +90 besides who wouldn’t want to be able to toss knives and go on high speed chases? At least the old man was a fighter, unlike the puss cakes that make up most animu leads. Plus he didn’t bitch, whine, moan, or complain.

@Crusader: The same odds of winning a coin toss by calling “edge”??? Good fun episode, though.

I may have accidentally spoiled myself by reading the plot synopsis of the 428 VN, now I’m wondering whether if characters who survived from that story will show up in future episodes…

I’m guessing the old guy was a part of a failed experiment which either made him, a kid at that time, grow old or involved the usual mind-body switching business, making him a geezer with the brains of a runt. Or both the old man and his companion were brainwashed; pick any cliche you like.

Canaan appearing out of nowhere for a random action sequence was random, but pretty to watch. Maria continues to annoy me, and I completely agree with you on the amnesia. Want more Alphard.

Having Lived in Shanghai for a long time, i fell out of my chair laughing when the chinese taxi cab driver did the “this is how we drive in this country.” They even got the Volkwagen Santana correct.

I wanted Super Eurobeat in the Car chase, wouldve made it a much better “homage”

    great show though

    Didn’t even notice it was type-moon :o

I’ve yet to watch it in full, but I must say the first few minutes where an instant turn off to me. It remembered me of Noir and Madlax with its characters, music and animation, which is definitly a no-no for me ; also, it seemed to ooze “we want to be cool attitude”, and made me squeel on my chair (kinda like the new FMP series with its “full metal alchemist !” english voices during the CM break !).
I didn’t like the story telling, the way Canaan was introduced for instance ; like I said, “cool attitude”. Seeing all the movies you guys quote in this thread, it’s probably intended though ! I’m not a fan of action flicks in general.
Now that I think about it, it somehow ressembles Black Lagoon, does it not ?

This is a pretty uninformed opinion, so I’ll have to watch it in full and say more. The first glance was pretty dissapointing for me, I had hopes for this series…

Love the animation so far. Lol at the anime interpretation of synesthesia, since I have grapheme-color synesthesia myself.
