Umi Monogatari 04-07: The Temptation of Urin

Once again it will fall upon two maidens in love to save the world…

After the lull in subs I have had a bit of trouble trying to get back into Umi Monogatari. I guess at this point that the first ep proved a lot more damaging to potential viewership but it is still chugging along with delicious yuri and some decent combat here and there. So it seems that Urin has fallen to the dark side as her yuri love for Marin seems to be at a dead end. I like how it was Marin that feared the darkness and eventually succumbed during the eclipse, given how Kanon was already evil she was impervious to suggestion. As Urin already proved vulnerable it made sense that Marin would not be immune to Sedna’s Jedi mind tricks. Since light was at its weakest during the eclipse and it was total darkness Marin’s powers seem to be solar powered and can work at night as the moon shines because of the sun.
I liked how close Marin and Kanon were getting prior to Urin betraying them so she could be powerful. Yuri lunches, Marin swearing that she will protect the feeling of love in Kanon-chan. Since no one seems to be watching this show I suppose that the beating of Sam will go on unsung. The guy tries to make a pass at Kanon and gets kicked in the face for his arrogance. Even Sedna’s minions thought little of him and beat the crap out of him for hitting on her. It also seems that Marin is very popular back home as Warin seems to have yuri love for her too. Fortunately despite ample amounts of yuri love it seems the sea people come from giant oysters and not hetero relationship is required. However this means that the population size will remain very small…

On the one hand I do sympathize with Marin over her loss of Urin but Kanon is pretty much blameless as they were the ones who insisted that Kanon keep that cursed ring. Even if Kanon and her Mom were very much “To Get Rich is Glorious” it wasn’t that evil. Still one has to appreciate their little scheme of selling random objects and passing them off as love charms. I think Kanon has come a long way in becoming a better person as Suzuki is calling her first to brag about being on TV, and she did help Marin get through the eclipse with out complaining. Sadly Kojima seems to keep calling Kanon-chan in a bid to steal her from Marin. Such a lousy little miscreant that Kojima is. I really liked how because they LISTENED TO HER SONG that they were both able to transform again. However as this was never written down it seems Matsumoto is starting to get way off the mark when it comes to history. I have to say though the butterflies of evil were rather nicely done and it was mildly amusing to see that Kanon and her mom came up with the same idea on profiting from the strange event.

Not sure how I feel about the new turtle Ichikawa, certainly I think she looked better when she was one with the darkness, but at least she only limits herself to inane babble and won’t be complaining anytime soon. Still if evil makes makes everything look more womanly I wonder what Urin will look like after she emerges from her cocoon. Even if this isn’t the funniest show out there I did get a good laugh or two at Kanon when she was trying out rings only to remember that her family has been abusing their magical heirloom to make pickles. While Kanon admittedly looks pretty good in her school swimsuit I still think that Kojima is up to no good as he stares at her with foul thoughts while on his dayto with Ooshima. I suppose that since Marin seems to be in her rut for the long haul over Urin that it will be a while before she starts hugging Kanon-chan again, which makes me somewhat dislike Urin. Ah well next time it looks like we get to see super loli Urin and Marin.
