With most students going back to school lately, it’s a fitting coincidence that today I begin retroblogging Great Teacher Onizuka. Back in the last round of voting it tied with Kare Kano, and due to the popularity and enthusiasm displayed for both I promised to blog each in turn. GTO just happened to lose the dice roll and so had to wait until now. So, here again we return to the end of the 20th century but in a very different form. Former bousouzoku member Onizuka Eichi has come a long way since his days of being a tough, crazy biker…well he’s come some of the way anyway. Still being a pervert and acting like a delinquent, he’s enrolled in a teaching college and is about to start his first two weeks of student teaching. But he ends up in the middle of a class of delinquents and conniving blackmailers, not the best start to his goal of becoming the “greatest teacher in Japan.”
Pwned.
A bit of a silly epi this week. On the one hand, we have random shenanigans at Seika’s ‘Outdoor School’ where the second year boys and girls promptly go nuts following a bit of spiritual training in the countryside. On the other hand, we get some much anticipated character development for the new bishie weirdo in town. And for the old weirdo. And for the object of his stalking, of course.

I apologize once again for being late at posting this, since there’s so much uncompleted homework left to be done and my obsession with a certain free RPG game (Go read the comments of previous episode reviews to find out what I’m playing) is certainly not helping. Just got my internet connection back 2 days ago and yeah, life is such a torture without any internet connection. And the weather became much of a dick this week. I keep this short, like always. (But I always feel that I write longer than I initially expected.)
Now, let me give you some good reasons why it’s good to be a little selfish from time to time and NEVER LET ANY STRANGERS INTO YOUR HOUSE! Yes, including your friends, especially if you’re living in Sotoba.

I have watched the entirety of Macross 7. I have watched the entirety of To Aru Majutsu no Index. I have watched the entirety of Blue Gender. And through all of these trials I have never just quit an episode midstream. At 6 minutes and 38 seconds into this final episode of Kare Kano I did so. If you asked any of my friends they would describe me as one of the most patient people they know. But all that patience evaporated as rapidly as an ice cube suddenly transported to the surface of a super hot O-Type blue hypergiant star. Even by the cost-cutting standards of other late-series episodes, this one is quite different. And as such, this post will be a little different. Contains strong language and unrestrained RAEG. Individuals with certain heart conditions, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and easily offended fanboys/fangirls should proceed with caution. (I love Kare Kano, I really do, but this episode…)
Let’s get serious for a moment, totally dead serious. Sure anime and manga is just a hobby for some of us, but for me it’s a life-long love affair. I’m 33 years old and though that’s still quite young (don’t mess with me here), I’ve gone through quite a bit (career, marriage, child). I’ve started watching anime just about after I learned to walk: Mazinger Z, Voltes V, Gatchaman, and of course Macross.
Since I’ve been watching anime for just about 30 years I thought I’d look at my life in the context of shows I’ve seen and liked. Some shows I just found very relatable and maybe they would at least superficially describe parts of my life.
Pfft, they obviously weren’t holding that spanner, those dowsing rods, that nail gun and, er, that spanner…
A bit of a strange epi this week. Highly entertaining, with some of the best comedy and dramatic moments yet, but strange nonetheless. One the one hand, we have frosty silences, shower scenes, pouting, cattle mutilation, potential duelling, kidnapping and little green monsters galore. Yet, on the other hand, we have people who have time to smile while their daughters have been abducted by big fat bitey monsters, people who should be dead (or at least badly wounded) remaining stubbornly alive, randomly disappearing pieces of clothing and lots of weird laughter when there shouldn’t be any weird laughter. And still no nearer to finding the Nostradamus Key. Unless I’m missing the whole point of this epi? Hmm…

Thank Gawd. After last week’s waste of an epi, this epi reminds us of what Maid-sama has otherwise been like of late. I.e.: On Fire. For example, this week we are treated to: the introduction of a fabulously quirky new character; the three bakas doing what they do best; Misaki in Awesome Prez/ tsun tsun mode; Misaki in dere dere mode; Usui in Usui mode; Misaki x Usui in kyaarific mode; several performances of the Kanou and Yukimura double-act; a dash of the Maid Latte crew doing what they do best; some very impressive aerial acrobatics; lots of hugs; lots of blushes; lots of chibi and loli forms; and the eating of lots of food. In short: lots of Win.
