Durarara!! Episode 11 – Calling in the Calvary

These two really are immortal…

Okay, so there’s no more speculation about who Mikado really is. Pretty much everything regarding the matter has been answered in this week’s episode. While not really much happened in the present, we learned a bit more about Mikado and why he started up the Dollars. Along with all the ass-kicking Celty action, we’re treated to a small cameo from the infamous dynamic duo as well.

EDIT: Check out the video at the bottom of the post. It’s sure to make you die from laughter… or die from too much blood loss through the ears.

Now and Then, Here and There episodes 03 and 04 – The Dogs of War

Shu awakes in his cell the next morning after being beaten and tries to talk with his cellmate, at first to little avail. Outside, we’re given an insight into the daily lives of Hamdo’s child soldiers as they train against each other for actual combat, overseen by a strict instructor who beats his charges for making mistakes. And elsewhere Lala Ru is brought before Hamdo again, this time in his verdant gardens where the plants enjoy more water than the soldiers, to say nothing of what the civilians might get. This pair of episodes starts fleshing out the world that Shu was brought to, generally painting it as darker than last time but in a few moments some genuine human compassion shows through in the smallest of actions. We also get a much better picture of the lives, motivations, and attitudes of the residents of this world. This humanizing is important to seeing the characters and their actions, whether humane or barbarous,  in the appropriate context. A few legitimately crazy individuals like Hamdo do exist, but the vast majority of his followers and soldiers are sane, rational people who were convinced, coerced, or who convince themselves into doing terrible deeds.

What Impz Hate about Anime – Damsels in distress

Just yet another example of the emo-subsersive shoujo female lead

I was recently watching a Taiwan soap opera while munching down my dinner. It was an epic story about love, easily summarized into men who cheated on women, and stupid women who goes all emotional while hanging on to those jerks like they are pots of gold. There was this sudden surge of anger raising up my guts when these women continue to cling like leeches like no tomorrow. Suddenly, this idea provided a good reminder of the pet peeve I have about the portrayal of females in anime.

Those bloody damsels in distress (DID)! What is the purpose of their existence?

Sora no Woto 11 – Not so quiet on the Western Front

Wait for it Price we only got one shot at that bastard Zakhaev…

Rio-hime has gone off to try and bring peace, but it seems that negotiations have been over for some time as it must have taken a while for both Helvetia and Rome to mobilize forces to far flung frontiers. Considering that Vingt, where the fighting was the fiercest in the last war, is in the east, it is no small logistical feat for the Romans to mass on the Western Border which was lightly defended but carefully watched. Noel seems to have been the Harbinger of the Romans’ destruction when she was working for Helvetian weapons reclamation (they weren’t making anything new they were just bringing back some of those old magical weapons). However it seems that Noel was dubbed as the Witch of Helvetia for being the Reclaimer of Lost Technology during her time under Colonel Hopkins. Much of this episode hints at how when Noel was loli that she had an affinity for the relics of the past that Helvetia needed to fight off Rome. The interesting thing here is that the use of WMDs is the side that is fighting for national survival which is probably the most likely use of WMDs in our own world as their use as first strike weapons is unthinkable in cases of mutually assured destruction be by internal WMD stockpiles or being under the aegis of a power that does have WMDs. Nevertheless one can be pretty certain that if a nuclear state were to be invaded and on the verge of perceived defeat the nukes would fly the VX gas canisters will be used. As serious as the use of chemical weapons is it seems that Rome with it superior numbers of conventional forces backed Helvetia into a corner and asked for Iliya and now Rio as a hostage wife of the Emperor between a the choice of fighting a war they probably couldn’t win and becoming a vassal state, Helvetia chose to fight it out for independence and eventually resorted to unleashing the horrors of the past to avoid defeat. In that context the use of Noel’s reclaimed chemical weapon (possibly a blister agent like phosgene given the coughing of blood, though there is a lack of horrific blisters) isn’t as clear cut as it may seem from the usual WMDs are only used by the bad guys trope that permeates more simplistic takes/platitudes about war. Given that the Roman Army was attacking Vingt when the gas was used and they are invading now that the Emperor cannot have Rio as wife and hostage it’s not as if the Romans are the good guys either nor is Noel completely absolved of her involvement in creating the WMD (though getting sleepy might earn her more forgiveness in the short term).

To Aru Kagaku no Railgun – 23: GO NUTS!

Yeah we didn’t expect a lot of things to happen in this arc, but at least there was mecha…

Well they finally did it, Telestina is unmasked and the final boss and while there is mecha action and an BIG FIGHT to boot the revelation was poorly executed. In terms of story telling they are pretty poor at managing time, release of information, and foreshadowing. Even that new age hippie Kawamori seems to have one up them years age when Grace was revealed to be Super Dimensional Villain and mecha pilot. Telestina’s grimacing was rather meh in comparison as Telestina maintained her impeccable image until this 180 she did here. I cannot help but see Telestina as the next successor to Grace though Telestina seems to have less grand ambition and puts less into her nefarious scheming. Still at least they put more effort into robbing Telestina of all sympathy than they did with the long winded lectures in the previous episode. As jarring as Teleistina’s heel face turn was it did result in a BIG FIGHT involving a lovely suit of power armor and a grenade launcher. Hopefully Round 2 will see Telestina work out her calibration problems and a strike team will land on the Forest Moon of Endor to deactivate the Capacity Down before Round 2 begins. I liked mild mannered Telestina but this mad crazy mecha Telestina also works fine too. I guess there was a point to the fillers with Yomikawa and Tessou as they migt have a role to play in the BIG FIGHT that is about to happen. Not sure how Dorm Super is going to take part but I would most welcome the braking of a few necks it if helps her deal with being an unmarried widow.

Durarara!! Episode 10 – Awakening

Ryugamine Mikado ikimasu!

So what the hell just happened here?

For those of us who watched the latest episode of Durarara!!, there was a major turning point in the plot at the very end of the episode. There’re a few speculations I have on what the meaning behind Mikado’s little surge of inspiration was exactly, but we can safely assume now that Mikado will begin playing a major role in the series finally.

To Aru Kagaku no Railgun 22: The Uiharu Microwave

I bet she wasn’t as talkative when she was a loli…

This week’s Railgun episode had a whole lot of technobable to explain the Poltergeist suffice to saw it is a lot to take in all at once. Certainly it makes me miss the filler eps a little more. Still there were a few moments of Kuroko being delightful. Uiharu continues her losing streak with me as she isn’t trying to get her friends to understand and insists on backing herself into a corner when she really doesn’t need to. Kuroko at least is not reversing herself but at the same time is trying to tactful and making and effort reach out to Uiharu to get her to understand her position on the matter of Haruue. Thanfully Mii-chan recognizes Kuroko’s efforts and decided to try and help her out. Back at the dorm one of the better moments of the episode was when Kuroko was talking all cool right before another attempt to jump Biri Biri in the bath, I wish she succeeded. I guess Telestina’s prophecy of it being a lucky day did not apply to Kuroko as though it seems she had a very intense dream about onee-sama, sadly Biri Biri was too shy to jump right in the sack with her. While the information dump was pretty bad Biri Biri’s commando operation was a dismal failure on so many levels, well I suppose she can be forgiven as she is still in middle school and cannot claim to be Alphard’s prodigal daughter like Kuroko can.

Now and Then, Here and There episodes 01 and 02 – It Could Always Be Worse

Bidding farewell to most of the Macross canon, the next retroblogging series is Now and Then, Here and There. A 13 episode series from 1999, Now and Then, Here and There follows a boy named Shu, who is going about his daily life in a town in Japan until he sees a strange looking girl sitting atop a smokestack. After climbing up and trying to get her attention, the two are sucked into a dystopian world of deserts where an insane dictator brutally runs his country with fear and violence as his primary methods, a dictator obsessed with obtaining a power that the girl possesses. Despite the hell that faces him, Shu tries to retain his simple, optimistic attitude. This is at the heart of Now and Then, Here and There: humanity in the face of the horrors that mankind can unleash upon each other. Whether hope can survive the most brutal and cruel situations, and whether humanity is more defined by its capacity for good or by its ability to commit unspeakable crimes. Needless to say this isn’t a happy series, though it is hopeful in a way. I recommend having an episode of some wacky comedy or sugary-sweet shoujo on hand for afterwards.
