SDF Macross episodes 34 to 36 – The Long, Long Goodbye

opening

Parting is such sweet sorrow, and I’m going to miss this series that I’ve enjoyed and come to love over the past four months or so. There was so much to enjoy in the 36 episodes, from the aerial combat to the love triangle, to the memories of those lost and the little technical touches in the background. In these last episodes we see the conclusion of the Kanjin Insurgency and of the love triangle between Misa, Hikaru, and Minmay, as well as hints of what is to come in the future of the Terrans (both human and Zentradi.) So here’s to the original Super Dimensional Fortress Macross! Following the regular recap I’ll be sending off what has become one of my favorite series with a massive image/commentary spam of my favorite moments from all the episodes. It’s my long, long goodbye to a series I’ve had tons of fun with. Thank you to everyone who’s watched along with me or remembered a favorite series alongside my posts, from the old veterans to the relative Macross newbies like myself.

A Quick Announcement: I will be out of town next Wednesday, but the week after that I will watch and blog ‘Macross: Do You Remember Love?’ and attempt to make the Macross Meal that I mentioned once way back in an earlier post to accompany it. As for future retroblogging, my plans are this: while I would love to do the entirety of the Macross series as retroblogging posts, I don’t want it to monopolize all my blogging of old series so I won’t go on and do Macross 7. However, after DYRL I will be blogging Macross Zero and Macross Plus since those are both shorter, and because I feel a responsibility to try and help my fellow mecha fans through this Winter of Our Discontent (more like year, but anyway…) I plan on watching the remaining series in the Macross saga in in-universe chronological order, so after I watch/blog those I will move on to Macross 7. Maybe I’ll make one post every few episodes or something like that, but I plan to blog a non-Macross series after the OVAs. I’m open to suggestions on what that future series should be, if you have a recommendation.

There can be only one!

He remembers what he should be doing, yet fails anyway.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h29m20s145

No, it’s not.

Hikaru and Misa have a date planned, suggested by Hikaru, to go to the forest area park and have a picnic when Minmay calls Hikaru out of the blue. She wants him to come right away to see her in Highlander City, and Hikaru reluctantly agrees to go as Minmay prods him to forsake his promise to meet up with Misa. Naturally I raged at his continued spinelessness, but I calmed myself, resolute in the belief that my OTP, possessing righteousness and True Love, would eventually win the day. Nothing like trolling your audience close to the last episode, right Kawamori? RIGHT?! Once Hikaru flies out to the city he meets a disguised Minmay and the two head to a café. They talk for a while, but then Kaifun comes in, apparently sober now, and says that work for Minmay has suddenly come up and forces her to leave, though not before she gives him an extra long scarf as a gift, intending him to share it with her when it’s worn. Misa, meanwhile, is still waiting at an outdoor café for Hikaru, that indecisive son of a…

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h31m53s127

The sideline commentary continues, and this guy takes a different, but still wrong approach. You can’t win at their teasing game, same as you don’t fight the US in straight up battle and expect to win.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h34m24s116

Everybody in the café gettin tipsy (everybody in the café getting tipsy).

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h34m56s148

Kaifun’s douchebaggery is useful, for once.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h36m43s211

Timing man, timing. Use this line a little later in the story after they’re a confirmed couple.

Hikaru starts driving back to the airport when he finds a UN truck blocking the road. Apparently there has been a Zentradi attack at the airport, and despite the soldier’s protests Hikaru drives straight for the scene. Once there, he talks to the local forces and manages to get a Destroid for himself, leading the counterattack. Tear gas is fired into the Zentradi forces while their battlepods are disabled and the unarmored troops knocked out with fists and rifle butts. Once the incident is under control, Hikaru races back to Macross City, now in full guilt-mode for abandoning his promise with Misa. As he should be.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h38m41s132

Making a mess of things again, though Hikaru managed to prevent his plane from being destroyed.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h40m31s194

Hikaru cobbled together a team from the local defense forces to put an end to things, with only a few Destroids and one wayward Valkyrie.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h41m55s15

The infamous Destroid Spank attack.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h42m28s88

They need some giant-sized cuffs.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h43m06s216

You’re pushing your luck with me too, Hikaru.

After arriving back and running to meet Misa, who is still waiting, Hikaru gets back and apologizes, and Misa in her nearly limitless forgiveness accepts the apology. But I did say nearly limitless, because when they’re walking together and sharing the scarf that Minmay intended for herself, a booby trap is discovered. Much as the Supervision Army booby trapped the Macross when it fell to Earth, Minmay has added a diabolical feature to the scarf: her and Hikaru’s initials embroidered into the middle of the scarf with a heart between them. Misa is rightly pissed and leaves Hikaru to stand in the falling snow, hopefully reflecting on his actions. It’s a classic mistake in romance fiction, really, trying to use the gift or object from one love interest with another. Meanwhile Minmay is about to perform a concert, but when she gets on stage she won’t sing, even as the crowd tries to cheer her up by chanting. The concert cancelled, Minmay sits on the edge of the water when Kaifun comes over and has one of I think two moments of decency in the entire series. He questions what she’s singing for and tells her that she still doesn’t care about other people’s feelings. Even he’s had enough of her in her present state, and says that he’s going to leave, at least for now.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h45m15s219

And it would’ve been if you had just ditched that scarf.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h45m46s9

Ah, so that’s the scarf that Der Langrisser wanted to strangle Hikaru with.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h48m21s38

Just not in her anymore.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h50m00s17

Minmay needs some tough love if she’s ever going to get herself together again.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h50m25s211

Sorry Kaifun, going out on a high note in no way undoes all the BS you’ve caused.

While everyone in more northern climes is preparing for Christmas, Kamjin and his forces are preparing for their own sort of celebrations, repairing a crashed Zentradi gunboat somewhere in near Jaburo (seriously, what a homage/reference to the original Gundam, there was even the lingering shots of the wildlife.) The Genshiken Team have moved onto a more appropriate, if less profitable, job selling model kits, and on their way home they spot Minmay sitting on a swing in a park alone. They try to say hello, but she runs off, turning up later at Hikaru’s door. Even if he wasn’t so indecisive lately, he can’t be blamed for inviting her inside given how cold, snow covered, and obviously distraught she is. There they have something warm to drink while she warms up, but it bodes ill for the future.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h53m08s85

Maybe it’s a Gaw?

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h56m31s12

Their perfect job.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-20h57m44s21vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h01m53s196

These were two really nice shots, I do love the falling snow background. Also note the contrast in the colors worn. Coincidence? I think not!

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h02m50s248

It’s already bothering me.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h07m37s82

The bridge bunnies, and Misa? How do I get invited to this party?

Christmas Eve is not all carols and celebrations though. Kamjin needs components for the engine of his ship and has found out where they’re being stored. He personally leads several ships to find and seize the parts, and adding some strategy to his usual ‘guns blazing’ way of doing things, the UN team going out to intercept them is ambushed by Laplamiz’s forces who were waiting in the wreckage of a crashed ship. Millia and Max are leading the effort and engage in aerial combat with the Queadluuns, Millia and her old CO recognizing each other in the middle of it all. Eventually Kamjin finds the parts, and to prevent his forces from being pursued he orders the detonation of several incendiary bombs that were prepositioned in the city, forcing Hikaru and the others to return and help with firefighting and evacuations.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h09m16s41

I’m not sure how any of those insurgents managed to survive a fight with Max AND Millia fighting against them.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h10m00s217

I wish they had done more with Laplamiz and Millia in this scene apart from just the quick recognition of each other.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h12m00s149

YES! Make the pineapple salad of your love, for its end is at hand!

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h13m15s129

The Apsalus?

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h13m52s232

Damn Kamjin and his micloned supporters. Large areas of the city ended up being destroyed by the fires he started.

Even through all of this, the residents of the city managed to keep their spirits up through Christmas Eve night. Carolers and then masses of people began singing Christmas carols, and friends and families still spent the night together in relative calm and happiness. Minmay ambushes Hikaru this night too, preparing dinner and cake for the two at his home. By the time he returns its all ready, and he falls for her ploy, even responding to her moving in for a kiss. Unacceptable!

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h16m35s84

I NEED a Macross Christmas ornament!

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h17m23s42

Still together as the oddest couples in this show.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h18m53s173

I can’t stand it, I know she planned it!

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h20m16s247

WWHHHHYYYYYYY!?

The next day Misa is standing, looking out at the city and despairing over having overheard Minmay asking Hikaru if she could stay at his place when once again Claudia, Savior of True Love appears before her and consoles her. Also helping to turn the day around for Misa is Captain Global calling her in to offer her command of a ship that will be built as the first of many to take humanity to the stars. With the Zentradi and the Supervision Army still out there, Earth cannot be the only place where humanity exists. Even though she had been contemplating leaving the military since she is having a hard time seeing Hikaru all the time, this changes her mind. On her way home she stops at Hikaru’s and makes a confession covering pretty much everything in the love triangle. She tells Minmay that she likes her songs, and while she can’t contribute to culture like Minmay, she can at least protect it. And then she comes out and tells Hikaru that she loves him before she leaves, and Hikaru starts to chase after her even with Minmay shouting at him not to go.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h37m10s150

Claudia will not let this outrage stand! And ‘steal’ is the correct word.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h38m16s26

I request assignment to this ship.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h42m18s68

“Earth is the cradle of mankind, but one cannot stay in the cradle forever.” – Konstantin Tsiolkovsky.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h43m11s176

He needed it spelled out for him.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h43m54s111

Can’t stop the love Minmay!

Just as this happens Kamjin’s repaired ship finishes sneaking its way into Macross City and launches a barrage of missiles. With explosions going on all around them, Hikaru runs after Misa with Minmay chasing him and begging him to go with her to the shelters. At this point Hikaru seems to finally shake off the remnants of his on-again-off-again thing for Minmay amid the reality of the situation and realizes that when things get real and infatuation fades, Misa is the one he really wants by his side. That she’s the one who he shares his ideals and way of thinking with, and that she’s the one who will be there for him. The two make their way to their stations, and not long after that Kamjin’s ship fires its main cannon at the Macross, scoring a direct, but not crippling, hit. Capt. Global orders the bridge crew back to the old bridge and orders the Macross up for one last flight in defense of the city.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h45m25s227

The moment of truth.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h46m42s235

Hikaru leaves Minmay for the good, though he tells her that she’s never alone if she has her music.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h48m33s60

Nice, realistic aerial shot from Hikaru’s VF-1S. .

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h49m51s81

“These are the old days, the bad days, the all-or-nothing days. They’re back!”

The Macross rises once more to defend humanity and its Zentradi allies! In one of the most badass scenes possibly ever the bridge crew reunites with their Captain on the bridge of the old ship and prepares to launch. The Valkyrie squadrons too are doing their part, with Hikaru making a daring strafing run on the enemy ship. All the while the opening theme plays in the background. Words can not adequately describe the pure win of this scene. I had to turn my speakers way up and watch it twice myself.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h49m58s133vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h50m05s213

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h52m16s235vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h53m10s16

MAKUROSU! MAKUROSU!!!

The main cannon is then fired after the last Valkyries get out of the line of fire, but it’s not a direct, head-on hit. The ship survives intact enough to continue heading towards the Macross, with Kamjin and Laplamiz dead set on ramming it. The two have a surprisingly touching last few moments together, at first promising each other to survive and ‘make culture’ afterwards, though knowing that they’re on a one way trip. It’s probably the best way for things to have ended for the two of them, so completely unable to adapt to a peaceful life. While they killed a lot of people and caused a lot of problems, I can’t help but feel impressed with the purity and dignity of the manner in which they went out. Their ship doesn’t hit the Macross in the center like they had hoped, but their ship takes a good portion of the upper right part of the ship out before it crashes to the ground. Kamjin and Laplamiz, you were bastards, but I still tip my hat to you.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h53m59s12

The last word of the Macross.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h54m06s62

Almost enough.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h54m36s111

Going out like a badass.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h55m36s189

As deserved as it was, it’s still kind of noble and sad.

With the threat eliminated, Hikaru lands and meets Misa and as Minmay approaches we’re given closure on the love triangle. Hikaru has chosen Misa definitively by this point, and Minmay makes her future intentions clear: she’s going to move to a city somewhere far from him to try and rediscover why she sings and for whose sake. Misa offers to take her with them when the first colony ship departs for the Earth, so that her songs can be heard wherever humanity goes, and the two shake hands and reconcile their differences. Minmay gives Hikaru a goodbye kiss on the cheek, and walks away singing, leaving my OTP victorious the happy couple to start their lives together. Minmay goes out with class and determination to make her own future, and I respect that.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h56m17s95

Someone to come back to.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h56m59s5

A wise decision, especially considering what happened to Minmay when she lost sight of her goals.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h57m32s66

Misa, gracious in victory.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h57m45s177

And thus ends one of the greatest rivalries of all time.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h58m19s42

I’ll allow it.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h59m48s124

SUPER DIMENSIONAL DDAAAAWWWWW!

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-21h59m34s8

What a satisfying ending to such a great show! I’m at a loss for words to describe how much I enjoyed this.

vlcsnap-2009-12-16-22h00m40s157

This verse has ended. The Macross completed its final mission, its last fiery breath securing the future of all Terrans. Many were the conflicts ended on that day. And thus did Minmay return to her passion and Hikaru and Misa begin their lives together. Let the next verse begin.

Final Thoughts: – What a ride! Macross now takes its place with a select few science fiction anime in my list of favorites. As much of a Gundam fan as I am, it was a much better viewing than the original Gundam series, only falling behind it in one or two areas. While I wouldn’t say that I’m a convert to Macross over Gundam, this show is definitely on par with my favorite Gundam series (0083 and 08th MS Team.)

- I enjoyed the almost contradictory featuring of the idea of returning to past times in the last episodes. Minmay used the idea to try and push Hikaru into leaving the military and attempting to recapture their early days, even after so much has changed. And the theme is used differently by Misa and the other members of the Macross crew in their one last fight at the controls of the Macross. In both it was a simultaneous remembrance of what was good about the past and the futility of trying to go back to how things were. In the latter case it was acknowledged, the crew knew the Macross wouldn’t stay in the air long and stoically fought their last fight, while with Minmay it was a delusional and unrealistic attempt to revive and maintain past qualities. With the final fight of the Macross (and the idea of the last, exhausting fight in general) it’s almost a celebration of the temporary nature of reviving the past.

- My gripes about the love triangle being stretched out a few too many episodes after it probably should have been resolved, it did have a very satisfying and complete ending to it. And oh yeah: both of my favorite couples got together in the end!

- MISA INVICTUS!

- It’s interesting to see two different approaches to the technology and mechanical design between this and the original Gundam. While the level of technological detail in later Gundams certainly beats that in this series, it’s too early for me to say that one does it better than the other because I have yet to watch everything between the original series and Frontier. But Macross definitely took a more holistic approach to its technology and equipment. The Macross operated like an aircraft carrier with shuttles and radar planes in addition to its compliment of Valkyrie fighters and Destroid ground units. There was more attention paid to the ground crew and maintenance areas as well. What the original Gundam does have over Macross is the attention to mechanical detail and the explanation thereof. These things might have occurred in the background of Macross, but in Gundam things like the magnetic coating upgrade and discussion of mass production plans were told to the audience.

- Despite the series being shortened and then lengthened during its run, there were very few throw away episodes. Only two, if I remember correctly, actually felt non-relevant. Everything else fit the story and was enjoyable to watch.

- Thank you again to everyone who had read these posts and to those who have commented. Having other people go through the show with me had made it that much more enjoyable, and the comments were interesting, entertaining, and exercised excellent spoiler discipline. Thank you one and all!

    FIRST!

    As things should be lolool

It comes to no surprise to me at all how you ended up loving this series. It’s a pleasure to watch you make a house out of the bricks you shat after watching the finale.

Alas, it’s always bitter for me, no matter how glorious this end is. Minmay bites the dust. I congratulate Misa, despite the mean-spiritedness of her fans towards me. I’m still pulling for you Minmay. I always will.

It’s helpful I think to consider that Kawamori et al were first generation Gundam fags, so they trump all the UC-tards in the world. Beyond telling anyone who’d listen how their favorite show is the best and how other people are wrong, they made a beautiful anime that added to the lore and love for robots in a way that Gundam hadn’t done.

Macross mechanical designs have made the most influence on mecha anime — in that almost every show that followed it (at least in the 1980s though it’s still present) had one unit transform. Zeta Gundam had so many ill-advised transforming suits that I couldn’t stop laughing while watching.

I don’t think there was a passing of the torch. The torch was never passed and Boss Gundam still flies around Earth orbit bearing it. The Macross expeditionary fleets push farther out. In cases of Macross 7, FAAAR OUT indeed.

Thanks again for this retroblog! I look forward to Macross Zero, as I’ve never seen that, and Macross Plus, which I have (you should try to watch the OVA and the movie – the movie shortens the story but has some new/different scenes with even better visuals).

Love Flows By and Silver Moon, Red Moon are probably my favourite Minmay songs (as is, that is). DYRL is of course also a great one, but that one hasn’t happened yet.

A lot of the revisitations to the old songs by Mari in “MARI IIJIMA sings LYNN MINMAY” (album released in this decade) just vastly improve them, making–for me–Watashi no Kare wa Pilot and Zero G Love a lot more enjoyable.

Sniff, sniff… Now it’s all over. Oh, well.
Yeah, it’s a good/up lifting end after all. I like that Misa is big enough after all the crap that Hikaru & Minmay pulled on her. Hikaru got his s*ht together in the end . But i have to say “D*ck Move” from him going on a Date with Minmay when Misa is waiting for him.
Kaifun leaving the scene likea a rational human being is/was unexpected but i still hope a Zentradi/Battroid steps on him.
Kamjin and Laplamiz going out like “Bonnie & Clyde”. Def. Badass.
Can we officially say (or at least think) that the Bunny’s & the three Z-Spys ended up together. I think they would all six, make a pretty sweet pairings.

You covered alot of good ones, but if got to list some of my Fav. Moments:

-Max pulling a Solid Snake in the Zentradi ship by kicking out the Zentradi, stealing his clothes & stashing him in the crapper.
-Essentially every early reaction or discription of the Zentradi to “Culture”, Women & how they felt about it (yeah it was all new to them at that point but i still had a laugh every time they react like akward Teens to “regular” situations).
-In “Viva Maria” when Milla plast the enemy fighters with Komilla on her lap, who giggles like crazy as Mom & Dad deliver death & destruction to the masses.
-When Golg Boddole Zer wants to know more about what a Kiss is from Hikaru & Kakazaki…
-Hikaru’s break down when he tries to write Kakazaki’s Parents after the Omni-Directional Barrier overload explosion, and remembers/sees him stand by the Table smiling. (Always get’s me…)
-Hikarus dream in the Hospital in witch Britai turns into Kaifun & he blast’s him.
-One of the First meetings of the Z-Spys & the Bunnys in witch the Bunnys”force” the guys to Party hard in the Disco (Shammy: “Shake that Booty!!”)
-Roy & Claudia always looking after the Kids (both playing Cupid for the triangle).
    -Max Apron from “Viva Maria”.

I’m so looking forward to your “DYRL?” recap.

Can anyone answer this? Is Roy playing the “Runner” when he on Claudia’s couch, before he dies?

I wish to thank you for retrobloging one of my favourite series of all time, and giving me the urge to rewatch it again.

I love the last fight of the Macross which make me shed manly tears everytime I see it, even after seeing it times and times again.

    BRAVO!

It’s been really fun watching you take on the series for the past few months (it’s also been funny…I admire your wittiness).

But yeah…episode 24 is where I lose any sympathy with Hikaru. If he had rushed off to meet up with Misa right after Minmay got dragged away, fine – everybody makes mistakes. But staying at the bar for hours and drowning his sorrows…nope, screw ‘im.

And as you point out, Kaifun gets a very dignified exit, which just makes me hate him all the more. He’s been a total douche the entire series, and then he justifiably chastises Minmay the first moment he can, and makes it seem like he’s doing something noble by leaving. Grrr…

So congratulations again on finishing the series (and I’ll throw in another plea to get you to watch Flashback 2012 after you finish DYRL…don’t worry if you can’t find it with subtitles; it doesn’t need them). And I’d like to let you know that next week, I’ve got another “special” release coming out: the Macross Christmas album, which includes not only some (not very good) songs, but also a lot of Bridge Bunny banter and a short story about Christmas on board the Macross.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to DYRL!

Awesome job retroblogging as well as giving me a reason so go back and revisit this classic series. I’ll have to say, SDFM pulls at the heartstrings in a way that few mecha shows hence have been able to do. Your blogging it however helped enlighten me to how/why exactly it does this.

    @ ghostlightning

Watching the series was great fun, and it was great having THE Macross guy from the entire online community there enjoying it and commenting along :)

No shame in cheering for the losing side, but I’m sure you understand why so many people hate Minmay and love Misa (the two are sometimes related, sometimes not.) It does remind me of a bit of dialog in the fan dubbed parody/comedy Evangelion: ReDeath, if you’ve ever seen it. Ritsuko and Misato are fighting with each other over Kaji and it goes like this:

    Misato: bitch.
    Ritsuko: slut.
    Misato: skank.
    Ritsuko: tramp.
    Misato: whore.
    Ritsuko: …Minmei!
    Misato: You take that back!

Macross certainly had a very different feel to it than the original Gundam, and its technical designs certainly carried over to most other mecha series, though the themes and style of Gundam seems to have permeated the mecha genre more than those of Macross. Transformable mecha for me were initially a stupid and heretical concept since they don’t make much sense in realistic terms. Before watching Macross Frontier I had always kind of turned up my nose at the Macross franchise for this, having seen how badly the concept was done in the UC universe. In Gundam it felt forced and unnecessary, and the move towards transforming mobile suits is one of the reasons while I prefer early UC Gundam to the later stuff. But Macross managed to use it in such a way that it wasn’t irritating, and while transforming may not have been necessary or all that realistic, the show at least made it seem useful enough to not stretch the concept beyond all credibility. The three forms were actually useful, and I wasn’t left asking myself ‘why?’ unlike my reaction to the Zeta Gundam’s two forms, for example.

    @ Keith

Thanks, and thanks for reading, watching, and commenting along with my posts. I’ll check out the movie and decide if I’ll blog that as well once the time comes. I’ve seen one or two short clips from Macross Zero, so I know that the visuals are going to be pretty impressive.

    @ ToastCrust

I’ll have to try and find that re-do album, because ‘My Boyfriend Is a Pilot’ was just not a song I could get into in any way. Mari Iijima has attended and sang at at least two of my local anime cons in past years, and I regret not knowing about Macross until now or I’d have gone to the concerts. I hope she’ll be back this year!

    @ KB_SBI

I too hope that Kaifun one days gets what he deserves, but at least it gives me something to hope for! There are so many great moments in the show, thanks for bringing up the ones you did. So much to love about this show!

    @ Der Langrisser

Thank you for following along with my posts and for your commentary :) That last flight of the Macross was GAR as hell for all involved, truly worthy of manly tears!

    @ Yot-chan

Thanks. And thanks again for providing the ‘My Fair Minmay’ translation and your information of different subtitle versions as well.

Kaifun, ah I’d have liked to seem him get his due but at least this way he actually helped someone, for once. I’m currently attempting to get my hands on Flashback 2012, and it says that it’s subtitled but if it’s not I can do without. If I can get that then maybe I’ll add that in before I start Macross Zero.

Sweet, a Macross Christmas album! I’m looking forward to it!

    @ d3v

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it :) The show really does have much more of an emotional impact than other mecha series, I definitely felt much more involved in Macross as I watched it than the majority of shows.

If you thought Minmay was awful, watch Robotech for the edifying experience of justified hate.

SDFM Minmay: Star on the rise, will get spoiled and long for innocent days. (Template for Ranka in some ways)
DYRL Minmay: Star on the top of her game, bratty bitch (Template for Sheryl in some ways)
Robotech Minmay: THE VAGINA OF THE UNIVERSE (Especially if you read the novels and the extended continuity. The writers didn’t like Minmay very much)

BUT I SOLDIER ON. LOVE FLOWS, AND WILL BE REMEMBERED. I AIN’T NO KAIFUN, AND I AIN’T NO HIKARU EITHER.

Have fun with the other shows. As Iknight said, Macross 7 is perfectly Macross, Macross Plus is merely perfect.

(BTW, I’m not the Macross guy; more like the Macross fag; there is no authority in my propaganda, just love)

Very much enjoyed your commentary on Macross.

When you get to Macross Plus, I hope you watch the longer and original OAV series, and not the movie, which leaves out a goodly chunk of the story and character development.

Will be interested in seeing comments on Macross 7: I’ve never seen that, and will be very interested in seeing a detailed discussion…

The End… Not yet. Watch Macross Flashback 2012 as to the final fate of the trio as they lift off into the final frontier. Course I recommend you watch DYRL first. As parts of DYRL are included in the music videos.

  12. Posted December 17, 2009 at 8:54 pm | Permalink

Indeed Misa’s victory was most delightful though in the end Minmay sort of redeemed herself. Still MISA FOREVER.

Sad to see that you will delay in Macross 7 I was hoping that we could wade through the weirdness together, but it will be fun to do Plus, Zero, and DYRL when in country.

You can say one thing about Minmay, which you definitely couldn’t for Ranka: She knew when she had lost and backed out gracefully, to hopefully grow up to be a better person.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us and it was an honor reading your work. I’ll see you for your next Macross project, where I’ll need to watch the episodes just as you do, since it has been so much time since the last time I saw them.

    Sigh. It’s already ended. :(

Thanks for blogging the show EO. ;) This was really one kick ass ride down memory lane for me. :)

I hope you enjoy DYRL, and Macross Plus (watch both the 4-part OVA and the movie please. ;) ). :D In a more interesting note, I also hope you like Macross Zero for the appearance of the most GAR character in all of anime. Personally, I liked Macross Zero mostly for the “eye candy.”

    @ ghostlightning

That almost, ALMOST makes me want to watch the Robotech version, but I’m not sure I could take seeing a show I love so much being altered and dubbed that way.

    @ DL

Glad you liked and are looking forward to more retroblogging, it’s been a really fun experience for me writing it.

I’ll definitely be watching the OVA version, with a possibility of the movie as well. As for Macross 7, since I’m not going to blog the whole thing, maybe I’ll make periodic recap entries or something, maybe at quarterly intervals through the series or something.

    @ ReddyRedWolf

Will do, I just managed to get my hands on Flashback 2012, with subtitles even!

    @ Crusader

    MISA FOREVER!

I’m really reluctant about not blogging Macross 7, but after the movies and OVAs it really should be time for another old series/franchise to get some love. And if you’ve got any suggestions for that, feel free to let me know.

    @ Magnus

Thanks for reading and commenting! Minmay definitely went out gracefully, and when she was selfish it only hurt others feelings. Unlike Ranka who was irredeemable to me, since her self-centered attitude, selfishness, and callous disregard for others cost LIVES, not to mention property and feelings. And to top it off Ranka was there at the end still acting like she deserved Alto, as if nothing happened. Pffff, like we all don’t know who won that little competition.

    @ grss1982

Glad you enjoyed it, blogging the show was a great experience for me too, both for the show and the conversations with its fans.

I’ll probably watch the movie version of Plus, though I haven’t committed to it just yet. Depends on how much its recap and how much its original. Macross Zero is very sweet looking, I’ve seen one or two short clips from it. Though I’ve also been warned about exactly what altitude Kawamori was at when he wrote parts of it, heh.

  16. Posted December 19, 2009 at 12:50 am | Permalink

Kawamori didn’t write Macross Zero, Hiroshi Ohnogi (who wrote, among other things, the Claudia/Focker courtship episode of SDFM) wrote it.

The Macross Plus movie is mostly a re-edited version of the OVA series, but they do beef up the ending (and a few other scenes)…I’d say each version is a must-see, but you might want to wait a month or so between the OVA and the movie.

Still hoping that you’ll find time for 7 as well as 2. The latter, while not part of the main continuity and lacking the involvement of many of the original creators is still an interesting take on Macross as a whole and no well rounded tour of the story of Macross is complete without it.
