WTF? Indeed…
Yeah I know this is pretty damn late in the game but duty calls and I am still trying to make up for all that lost time. Well the final episode of Kampfer was an unrelated extra episode, but it was nonetheless enjoyable as role switching revealed how Hara-kiri Taiga had been coming up with a wardrobe change for Natsuru Girl-type, glad to see that it did not all go to waste. I don’t have much else to say about since it was pretty over the top visually and it had its moments. The only thing that really stuck out was Natsuru’s selfcest and the continued AWESOMENESS of Capitalism from the class president, VP, and accountant. It was pretty stupid but I laughed here and there.
Final Thoughts:
Overall it wasn’t much more than a yuri fanservice show, and on that level it succeeds quite nicely, but quite why and how expectations actually rose is beyond me. If one wants some sort of story and plot then they will be rudely disappointed as I was with Ranka when she had her defining moment of EPIC FAIL. Otherwise so long as expectations are low Kampfer won’t disappoint too badly, though Kampfer Akane helps out a lot. As much flak as Natsuru Boy-type gets his loyalty would have been admirable had it pointed in a reasonably good direction (Akane or Shizuku) but it was directed at Sakura who didn’t get AWESOME until she revealed herself as the BIG BAD and mistress of a yuri harem. Just goes to show that even with his almost Patrick Colassour level of loyalty he ended up coming off as an idiot and a moron by virtue of him being horribly misguided. The unashamed shout outs and references were fairly funny if only to make the viewer realize that the Kampfer Team was watching the same shit they were watching. I have to give them bonus points for being UC oldfags and possibly some of the elite few that survived Macross 7. I certainly hope the cast had fun with this since I quite enjoyed how Akane went from meek megane girl to gun wielding Yandere with salt water in her veins. Unfortunately I don’t think we’ll be hearing that much swearing from the cast anytime soon, which is a shame as it was music to my ears, not mention gloriously different from the roles they usually do. There were a couple good eye-catches, the Hatsune Miku cosplay comes to mind, and for an 11 ep series it didn’t over stay it’s welcome too badly for those of us who maintained low expectations. Maybe things will change in the event there is a second season. As to that I am willing to give it a chance since Dark Sakura with her White Kampfer Yuri Harem is much more fun that the bubbly ditz she was for most of series run. As a comedy it managed fairly well though it was far from the best this year, it was pretty average in my opinion it had its moments but whether or not one even gets to them is dependent on how high a tolerance one can have for Natsuru Boy-type. I’ll leave it to others who read the source material to crucify this adaptation as a travesty. However I think it was just one of those instances where not reading the source material made it more easily enjoyable.
Final Grade: B- (and only because of Akane)

At least that message was consistent…
Hooray for new clothes!
I agree Harakiri Tiger’s sense of style is impeccable.
Save for the lack of pants I agree with this emulation of Alphard onee-sama’s style.
I see that it was time for E-Team to have a go at this Kampfer thing.
BTW does this count as Yuri furry?
It was fated to happen…
Well kid your hair is within regs, welcome aboard.
Take life by the horns.
Best NatsuruxShizuku pairing.
What is this the Church of Violence?
I suppose they bring new meaning to democracy in action…

Why I expected something from this show, I don’t know. The manga made it seem like it was a new slice of magical girl/guy gender bending pie. Alas it was more like a disappointing cake where you thought there’d be more layers on the inside only to find that merely the outside of it was frosted. I’d give this show a 5 only because I like fanservice and Shizuku was okay.
I admit if I look at it from that angle I guess you got a Pineapple Cakey in the end. I guess I lucked out for not being such an avid reader out side of the military, and history genre.
Have to agree with you TorontoSyrup, though I would only give it 3/10 for the fanservice.
And as a bonus, as if the voice of the Harakiri Tiger wasn’t painful enough to listen to already, you got to endure this ear bleeding torture the whole last episode (屮゚Д゚)屮
Seriously, could some crazy Japanese please axe-murder this Seiyū, I’d appreciate it if I never hear that voice again.
Just to note: Yes, I know the main character does have the same Seiyū, it’s just that Tiger…GRRRR
Oddly enough The Seiyu for Harakiri Taiga was Shizuku from Doraemon, it didn’t bother mee to much to be honest Natsuru Boy-type on the other hand…
Overall it was wrong in many ways …
The only reason why I watched this was because of Shizuku but to see how things went it was really a painful experience… I mean Shizuku doesn’t deserve this ><
Shizuku does deserve better, but she went for the Boy-type instead of the superior Girl-type, such is the tragedy of free will…
Nice review, Yuri furry rofl niceee this episode was weird but a funny one. Great to see the characters acting different than usual yey for costume changes too.
It certainly was different and mildly entertaining…
In the end, I watched it as a guilty pleasure (for greatgender bending, fanservice and yuri) and got my moneys worth.
It is what it is and nothing more it’s not like they tried to mislead us with the promise of something much better.
