This episode follows Shizuo and explains a bit of his past and his personality. Despite being a pretty decent episode with a bunch of awesome moments (basically every time Shizuo goes on a rampage), there really isn’t much to talk about in terms of the story. Although, I thought his signature *snap*, *stomp*, *rage* was quite the awesome.

Shizuo’s personality is pretty much straightforward. Whenever he’s irritated by something or someone, he goes on a blind rampage destroying everything and everyone in his path with his tremendous strength. This all started when he was just a kid and got into a fight with his younger brother. His rage, however, led Shizuo to constantly injury himself every time he would try to pick up some heavy object. But over time, Shizuo became stronger and eventually became able to endure the toll on his body.

It appears that Shizuo has been acquainted with a number of characters from the story. He’s known Shinra ever since elementary school and even attended the same high school as him. Through Shinra, Shizuo also met Celty and eventually Izaya. However, even from their first meeting, Shizuo did not admire Izaya at all and attempted to fight him (only to get hit by a truck). Thus, began Shizuo and Izaya’s rough relationship. It also seems that Dotachin knows Shizuo (he possibly went to high school with him based off one of the scenes in this episode) but Shizuo has yet to acknowledge him.

After high school, Shizuo went through various professions getting fired from each one because of his violent behavior. His younger brother, Kasuka a.k.a. Yuhei, visits Shizuo giving him a box full of bartender clothes. He tells Shizuo that he should not change his job so much and hopes that the clothes would be motivation to keep on working as a bartender. However, he is unable to comply with his brother’s request when he is framed by Izaya for some crime (which he is later found to be innocent). Afterward, Shizuo meets Tom, an upperclassmen from middle school, and starts to work with him as a debt collector.

If you ever…

…see Shizuo do this…

…you better get your ass out of there!

I think Shizuo’s the coolest character in the anime. You have to wonder though, what’s the heaviest thing he can lift?
There’s no limit to Shizuo’s strength!
I was wondering how they were going to explain Shizuo’s superhuman strength, and had guessed at something occult or scifi. But i loled at Shinra’s explanation – his character is pure win. I was also surprised at how interwoven the story actually is. I am dying to know what Izaya did in the past, and what he is doing now. I wonder if that shopkeeper will ever make a 2nd appearance.
(…maybe i should fall into a blind rage myself sometimes)
The shopkeeper’s role was so minor that I doubt she’ll appear in anything meaningful in later episodes (maybe a cameo or two like the kidnapped girl from episode 1/2).
Great episode finally seeing Shizuo’s story and his strength and also seeing the other characters in school together was nice to see, Shizuo is by far my most favorite character in the show right now.
Fo sho.
LOL. No wonder Shizuo always wanted to kill Izaya and go RAGE when he sees him. It’s like dog n cat.
oh, so lovely
