To Aru Kagaku no Railgun 24(Final): A Certain Crazed Mecha Fan (and final thoughts)

She was such a cute and impressionable loli…

So the end is finally upon us and they generously turned up the action even if they snuck in a short lecture. I was surprised that they would go so mecha heavy with Telestina and her rescue bot that was used to deliver rocket punches. It’s a far cry from Grace O’Conner and her end game gambit but it was nice to see a some thing similar even if Telestina comes off as the less well funded of the two. It was good to see Mitsuko finally show her stuff and take down two MAR Black Hawks. I had hoped that the alliance between Kuroko and Mistuko would be the start of a beautiful freindship but alas it remains a rivalry though now a mildly more friendly one. The power of friendship is in full effect and with a little help from the Anti-Skills it at least puts their filler ep in a better light, as much as I like Dorm Super she did not contribute much though I guess she served as a segue into child errors. The action was all round good, but my favorite part was when Kuroko fed ammunition to the Railgun to bring down Telestin’a mecha. A close second was when Kuroko broke out a whole bandolier of nails and wore them Rambo style. I was somewhat saddened by Telestina not having a great big DRILL and instead had a railgun lance instead, but I’ll take what ever mecha action I can get. Saten’s intervention was not as bad as I thought might end up and was glad that she wasn’t beating up mecha with a bat and saving her pinch hit for control console. Mii-chan on bike was also delightful.

Overall it was a good end though I have misgivings about how Telestina went from mild mannered to totally batshit, they could have hinted at it better, hopefully next time things will look up. I really hated how they decided to use overly long lectures to explain things it’s pretty boring and from a story telling point decidedly lazy and unimaginative. There is so much to like about Railgun and yet some of the the problems from Index did carry over. My own personal hatred for Spikey-kun aside I wasn’t that trilled to watch Index pigging out either for no discernible reason that LOL cameo. I am rather conflicted by the plot to filler episode ratio and while I think they might have done more service to the plot by cutting back on the filler, I suspect that they would have done overly long lectures instead as well as other unsubtle story telling methods. I am in the minority that feels the fillers weren’t all that bad and I enjoyed Railgun more as an Yuri Comedy with a bit of action than a Yuri Serious Action series. Uiharu really started to drag down my excitement towards the end with her weeping, but on the other side of things Kuroko impressed me through out and her antics were all the more loveable for they were all for onee-sama. In then end the parts I loved I really loved, and the parts I hated I really hated, so it is rather difficult to sum up my thoughts on the show and put it into words. The action was excellent, it was just how the context was set up that kind of grated on me.

Kuroko being awesome aside, Biri Biri didn’t disappoint much either though Saten exceeded my expectations for her and I grew to like her more than just simply as Uiharu’s skirt flipping admirer. What little we saw of Mii-chan was enjoyable, but again Uiharu did drag things down a bit and so did Nugi Onna during the end game. The hinted at the next arc just fine I just wished they had executed the last arc with Telestina with more finesse. I am sure there will be a Railgun 2 down the line but that will probably be after Index 2, which I confess will probably skip for the most part save for the eps with Biri Biri and Kuroko. The mecha action was unexpected but enjoyable since there were a few ROCKET PUNCHES thrown even if they weren’t as grand as those of Almighty Zeus and Mazinger Z. Railgun is quite watchable even if there are moments when one feels like banging their heads on a wall. It was odd that the filler comedy portions were better executed than the serious storyline parts, and again it works better as a yuri comedy. There were a good number of memorable moments though for me they usually involved Kuroko and Saten-san making faces. I look forward to more, but in terms of story telling I will be bracing myself for longer lectures about the setting and how powers work.

Final Grade: B+

Who’s it for?: Recommended to those who found Index to be more than tolerable and are looking to see a yuri comedy starring Biri Biri, you will not be terribly disappointed. Fans of Touma can suck on an egg and enjoy the interruptions of Spikey-kun, towards the end they can choke on donuts when Touma doesn’t save the day. A good bet for yuri fans looking for a funny yuri comedy powered by Kuroko’s yuri lust. Do not take if you are allergic to yuri. Allergic reactions to yuri include stupidity, thumping of holy books, 50 kinds of lose, 75 kinds of fail, having the manners of a goat, and a rotten demeanor. Side effects include making references to old un-married widows, playing old arcade games, coin flipping, and limiter mode off. Women ages 13 and older might experience a desire to wear shorts with mini skirts. Those women with an affinity to yuri may experience increased desire for skin-ship with onee-sama, and discover how lovely garters are. Those mecha fans suffering from severe withdrawal from mecha should only take in mild doses, and only the last two eps. Railgun should not be considered to be a true mecha series and will provide temporary relief until the VOTOMS OVA. Please take as directed. Contact Chaplain Crusader for a tough shit card and a hurt feelings report if you take Railgun without reading the warning label and suffer from butt-hurt.

I kind of miss her not being a crazy lady…

I approve of your homage to Samus Aran…

Thank Zeus there was more mecha than just these guys…

Mii-chan looks so bad ass as a biker…

Not how quite Saten imagined having Uiharu sit on her lap would be like…

Look at it this way Kuroko your mothers had to fight MH-60 DAPs and Delta I am sure you can handle MAR…

No one said this was going to be easy…

Let me guess those were MAR’s Super 6-1 and Super 6-4…

A very bleated entrance but thanks for showing up.

Kuroko is switching to full auto…

Not to mention the heir to Alphard and Liang Qi…

Kuroko is Biri Biri first waifu, know your place…

Life is funny that way…

Resetting the kill count to zero…

A noble effort in trying to be like Grace…but your construction bot isn’t as cool as a VF-27 I’m afraid…

That’s why you were suppose to grab Mii-chan’s waist…

The Girl Who was Tossed Through Time…

Telestina was most excited to bring her toys to the fight…

So wait you built that Metal Gear…?

LIQUID!

Telestina wanted to communicate with her fists…

Tessou that Eotech still needs for you to be looking through it to work…

One girl’s trash is another girl’s treasure…

ROCKET PUNCH!

But where’s the fun in that?

Biri Biri loves to taunt her enemies…

So glad you could stay…

Do you know her three sizes as well?

Would have been cooler if she snapped her fingers…

But Kuroko would teleport 500 miles
And Kuroko would teleport 500 more
Just to be the girl who teleported 1000 miles
To fall down at Biri Biri’s door

This projectile of her’s IS GLOWING RED! IT’S LOUD ROAR TELLS HER TO GRASP VICTORY!

They make such a great team.

Wait we got like 15 minutes left…uhhh. Just kiss and make it a long one.

…And Uiharu who had searched far and wide heard of a the maiden in the glass coffin…

Battle Buddies 4EVAR…

Telestina Prime the other Telestina…

Wouldn’t your rather have a love child like Kuroko instead?

Here’s Johnny…

HOLY SHI- I hope Haruue is ready for some Telestina yuri lurvin…

Three miles up and three miles down…

Yeah right then some one is going to go for to seven seven, only be topped by a guy who gets to ELEVEN…

Char Kick, the Wild Bear Kick, and now the Crazy Teletsina kick…

Psst… if you going for the Kratos looks the red goes on the left eye…

They used the Hermann Yandell Gambit on you…

All the more impressive in that Saten wasn’t using performance enhancers…

Kuroko may be down but she isn’t out…

Don’t forget to thank Kuroko now…

Let your Drill Pierce the Heavens!

Telestina why do you insist on embarrassing yourself?

So sad to see that it was not a drill…

Is that the Ultimate Secret Technique?

NOW LISTEN TO MY SONG!

Uiharu is happy that its now a foursome…

Oh Saten such a smooth girl…nice try at triggering Kuroko’s flag.

Nugi Onna just triggered her flag…

And here I was hoping that BIG FIGHT would be the beginning of a wonderful friendship…

Kuroko is BOSS…

Yep they just told the whole city that you are over thirty…but hey it’s the thought that counts

They’re just happy to be twenty something…

Next time I want you gals to be Saten’s fire team…

So does the red one go faster?

I almost didn’t see ya there…

May one day you escape the label of unmarried widow…

Talk about robbing the Grave…

Thank you Kuroko for being awesome…your mothers would be so proud of you.

What no skirt flip?

And you didn’t let Spikey-kun steal the show or save the day, bravo my dear, bravo.

I am going to miss this, but here’s hoping for something to fill in the void. Hopefully next time I will get to see Kuroko all grown up.

Agreed great series lots of fun episodes and cool characters, Great ending as well! cant wait to see if they do more with this series with or without Index is fine with me. Going to miss Saten shes a great character =) and yay spikey didn’t save the day go Biribiri!

Spikey kun chickened out because Telestina wasn’t using powers but mecha. Had Touma showed up to try and save the day his ass would have been impaled by Telestina’s Drill Lance.

Saten will be missed especially her skirt flipping habits. ;)

Stuff blew up and Biri-biri and friends saved the day. Railgun needed more episodes like this.

I see that you purposely did not include the shot of Touma and Index at the end.

I think Railgun would have worked fine if they cut back on the lectures and put more effort into Telestina’s eventual betrayal. But it did end on a good note.

Why would I need a shot of Touma and Index? This is not Index, and they didn’t do shit! :P

Overall it was a pretty fun series. Had some low points, but can’t complain about a crazy action filled episode like this one.

Good noticing of Saten’s behind the scenes flag triggering. While it might be hated, if things do pick up with Mikoto and Touma she will be ready to pick up the pieces. Her harem is moving along nicely since she’s already got Uiharu, her friends, the eyebrow girl, maybe the gang leader girl, and should be able to work in Haruue and the other kids. Toss in Kuroko and she’ll make up for being a level 0 with her harem powers!

Great job posting about the series. Might disagree about Touma, but that’s not a big deal.

Bah I’d rather seen an Act of Union between all the yuri pairings than see Touma with Biri Biri he can keep Index.

Thanks for reading it was an enjoyable ride even with the light of Kuroko and Biri Birir was marred by the spikey shadow of Touma

Thanks for blogging this series. I really enjoyed this show a lot (and way more than Index). Even if the pacing wasn’t that great, Railgun has been a great action-packed comedy that I wouldn’t mind rewatching sometime in the future.

It’s too early to tell but certainly this continued lack of mecha and yuri is most disheartening. Here’s hoping that there will be sopme more surprise yuri and surprise mecha.

Index is alright, but it is Touma I hate with a passion.

My Unit uses Eotechs so I tend to apply the general term to all cool guy sights (I have to use Iron Sights still), but I have seen USAF guys with aimpoints take 9 hours to zero in their weapons with aimpoints… Suffice to say it’s not going to help a bad shooter qualify, it’s an aim assist and not the one you get in COD Modern Warfare 2.

I have an eotech, which I like. No experience with aimpoints, but I’ve used some generic red dot sights, and they’re not bad.

I have seen guys miss with eotechs as well people tend to think the things are universal when in fact you have to adjust them like you have to with Iron Sights, also there is a learning curve and some people are just slow learners.

Ah yes Kihara family values…. Tsk Tsk Telestina you think Level 6 is the real reason why Academy City was created? You’ll be horibly disappointed. All of it is an intricate plan of a man in tube upside down.

Che… Here I thought this episode will show what Telestina’s esper ability is.

On Mitsuko (not eyebrow Mugi) we finally see here Aero Hand! That is a strage poer turning thing into missiles with a wind abiity. From what I know in the light novels there are variations of he same base ability. We never did get a reason why a Poltergeist occured around her.

On that note (Ban)Richan is awake. Poor girl spent part of her puberty asleep. Better drink milk like Mii sempai.

Also girls… You know the woman uses Capcity Down you should really have brought ear plugs. Then again Saten wouldn’t have her heroic badass moment.

Oh Are we sure Kuroko isn’t a Heroic Spirit, a Servant of the Holy Grail War? I got a Shirou shouting “Koi! Saber!” flashback with Mikoto summoning Kuroko.

There were somethings that they didn’t bother to explain but it is what it is…sadly.

I think Telestina’s love for mecha was all that she really needed, that or her esper ability was consummate acting skills that fooled everyone.

I was hoping that Biri Biri would call out RISE KUROKO! and snap her fingers in homage to G Gundam.

Personally I thought her ability had to do with getting different colored candy out of that thing she carried around, it always did give her the color she wanted.

And that reminded me of the speech loli-teacher gave in the first season, about pulling chocolate out of a box that may or may not be empty.

    *Goes into Ham Mode*

This episode proves that Mikoto is truly the successor of the God of Thunder of Olympus. She would make a grand leader like her predecessor the Mighty Zeus who sadly was killed by the traitorous, monstrous, bloodlusting Kratos who crimes include killing his brother, the heroic and brave Hercules and lusting the pure Goddess Aphrodite. May Mikoto take the throne of Olympus and punish the abomination called Kratos!!!

    *Ham Mode Off*

    Anyway, nice review.

Incidentally, I find it kind of funny about all of the potential worries of Touma stealing Mikoto’s spotlight in Railgun. Watching Index, especially the beginning and middle parts, gives me the impression of Mikoto stealing Touma’s show. In fact, when Railgun was first announced, my thought was:

“Oh, look. They’re being honest and giving the real heroine and fan favorite her own show.”

I am glad other people weren’t fond of the 180 Telestina did in the final two episodes. Perhaps instead of spending so much time on all the minor characters of this series they could have hashed out the main story more.

I do look forward to a Railgun 2 as well as Index 2. But I like Touma’s epic/useless speeches over Uiharu any day.
