Kimi ni Todoke S2 – 02: The Move

Still in the same class, but those desks look awfully far apart…

Episode 2 finally brings Sawako and Kazehaya together again alone for the first time since New Years. Let’s see if it was worth the wait!

Summary-in-a-sentence:

The gang begin their second year together and Kento and Sawako are the new class reps, with Sawako put in charge of the flowers, while Kazehaya looks on…

Crusader

After having broken the truce the treacherous Ume beats a quick retreat to let the dust settle. However Ume’s machinations are exacerbated by the increased distance between Sawako and Kazehaya, leaving a flank wide open for Kent to make a nuisance of himself. This Kento seems to be a faithless dog that is only interested in Sawako after she came out of her shell. I highly doubt that he has ever dealth with true love and now seems to be intent on claiming Sawako as his newest conquest. It is well that this Kent can see past Ume’s facade but the fact that he approves of her vile personality makes him an enemy. Should this rascal be indeed looking for a short dalliance then I insist that he be laid low like Ume, and may his heart chip and shatter.

On the Ryu and Chii-chan front things are going remarkably well and I do hope they will be going to that wedding together. While Ume and Kent are hating on KazeKo at least RyuuChii is going at a decent pace. Poor Yano is by herself and it seems Jo has not given up or gotten a clue. Pin makes himself yet more annoying by re-orienting the seats to the detriment of Kazehaya. I will never forgive Pin for this Move the good people of Cleveland will sooner forgive Art Modell for moving the Browns than I will forgive Pin for Moving Kazehaya and Sawako. Long may Pin live in infamy and unhappiness as a result of this most vile “Move” in KnT history. I also  suspect that this worthless Pin is in league with the hated Ume and the sleazy Kento. Should this be the Axis of Evil then I look forward to braking their will and crushing their throats.

It is good to see that Sawako is expanding her circle of friends and getting new allies even if the new boys are a crude and ignorant lot that need to be educated. In the mean time though I am hoping Chizuru kicks the crap out of all of them to show them all that they are not yet men. Kazehaya still lacks the capacity for decisive action he should be the least contrained of all and should lay it all on the line but seems to shrink from what must be done. Hence this Kent has established a beach-head and it will take a whole lot of effort on Kazehaya’s part to cast Kent back into the sea of despair. Nevertheless the portents of the next episode seem dire but maybe by some miracle this Kent fellow might redeem himself should he prove to be worthy of true love. Hopefully even if Kazehaya’s courage fails him maybe Sawako can sort out her feelings, hopefully just because Kazehaya refused Yano’s aid does not mean that Sawako will make that mistake.

So cute...

A most glorious two years they will be.

Sawako's smile will always beat Umre's frown.

Time to shine kid be bold be DECISIVE.

Seems that we are now at a stalemate again Yano-chin, time to give Ume a good kick...

Sadly Sawako was ambushed by Ume's jealousy.

Ume has broken the truce... time to set sail for some bitter ship to ship combat.

I share your frustration...

Damn Ume is trying to copy...

No need to be impressed, the Kent is the worst team in the NBA.

Kazehaya I AM DISAPPOINT your foe was in striking distance...

Thanks Tomo-chan we must give due praise to Sawako's gardening.

:3

I see things are going well.

My aren't you looking radiant this season Chii-chan.

It is time to intervene now that Ume has made her treachery known.

It's fine to turn down help so long as you can wage an offensive on your own...

Sawako is shocked, now only if Kazehaya could master the awe part...

AND THEN SOME.

...Whatever it takes or how his heartbreaks right?

Hana:

Gardening has never looked so daww.

Firstly, woah to the haterade being poured by my esteemed colleague onto the new blondie on the block. Though it looks like he might indeed make a nuisance of himself, Kento is a new transfer student after all and thus, if he is interested in the ‘new’ Sawako (i.e. the only one he knows), then frankly I don’t blame him. And he gets points for being able to see how adorable she is.

Back to my fangirling. Well, after the Sad Bishie in Snow ordeal we had to suffer at the end of last week’s epi, it was nice to see that spring(/love) is in the air once more. Seriously, how gorgeous were some of those BG shots?!

Sad Bishie in Spring.

Back to the dorama. The seat swapping was indeed a blow to Kazeko, however, along with Kento’s puppyish interference, maybe it wasn’t. In other words, it lead to some good ol’ let’s-force-the-love-interest-to-MAN-UP-by-making-him-jealous tactics. Or rather, in his case just to STAND UP while looking a bit miffed. Or rather, a bit more miffed, when he realises that blondie and the object of his jealousy both get to be the class reps together. Either way, the ending scene was a whole load of both satisfying and frustrating. I.e. the whole waiting for her and yet not waiting to hear her out thing, respectively. I mentioned the BG shots earlier, and here I’ll mention again how atmospheric the shots in the classroom were, while the late afternoon sun was gently filtering in through the windows, possibly symbolising the realisation of their feelings for each other, or at least for Sawako (i.e. from the ‘isn’t he lovely’ to the ‘I think I love him’ mode of thinking).

Back to the other stuff. Yano-chin’s frustration was suitably relatable; Pin was as egocentric as ever (indeed Yano, as if he could follow-up something that perceptive regarding everyone’s relationships with each other with anything else, heh); Ryu and Chizu were as cool as ever; and Sawako in flower-fairy/witch mode was just pure daww…

Pure daww.

…which leads me to finally mention a bit more plot. Yeah, ‘bit’ being the operative word. Yet, though it may not have felt like much action, Sawako’s new position as class rep/ gardener extraordinaire was another significant leap for her in terms of her own growth (no horticultural puns intended). For, as symbolised by chocolates last week, she now has more people rooting for her (hey, I warned you) and for whom she can show her gratitude and affection via what will surely become the baddest bed of flowers in the history of school flowerbeds… mark my words…

DEATH TO KENT!!!! DEATH TO PIN!!!! May Mr. Ookawa come and beat them both for being dumb! Alas if only Kazehaya had his own fairy trapmother, Kurako you are missed :( . As for Ume the girl is growing on me, i forsee redemption in her future. :)

Ah, you know you’d miss (raging at) them if they weren’t in it! Kurako is indeed missed, but Kazehaya wouldn’t've accepted his help anyway!

Sadly when Yano offered Kazzehaya declined may he not regret that decision. though Yano can still be Sawako’s Friendly Love Fairy.

I like the new guy. At least from these initial impressions he seems like a character that will be entertaining at the least, if not critically important. I expect his character entrance to have the same purpose as the old childhood friend in “Kaichou wa Maid-sama”, adding a bit of romantic conflict. This show NEEDS some conflict that is not just internal. Perhaps I am just weird, but I really like Pin, especially after this episode. He’s obviously not completely stupid, and has his students’ wellbeing in mind. I can deal with the overflowing ego as it’s a pretty funny comic device. Also, I’m sure I’ll be bombed for saying this but, hooray for new seating chart. Hopefully it will help Kazehaya man up to some degree by the end of the season. I really hope they don’t make Sawako confess to him first.

I’d say your response to new boy is legit, and I was also pleasantly surprised by Pin’s behaviour, I like the way that there seems to be a bit more to him than just the spiky haired ego. Well, here’s hoping that the new seating chart, along with the new boy, will have a positive affect on Kazeko/ Sawahaya in the long-run!

The kind of conflict I want is Yano vs Ume in a BIG FIGHT a FRIENDLY DUEL TO THE DEATH to honor Mazinkaiser. The fact that Pin has an inkling of intelligence makes his treatment of Kazehaya all the more unforgivable.

I’m just happy to see that Ryuu-Chi haven’t been left out of the lime-light…

and regardless how much we rage…deep down inside we know that Kazehaya won’t man up till probably around episode 11 lol… (hoping that I’m wrong though..)

    =)

I positively cheered at the RyuChi action in this epi, wasn’t long enough of course, but I just love how endearingly, cluelessly optimistic she is and how freaking cool he is. :) And lol – don’t we know it indeed!

All I am asking is that Kazehaya at least adopt some plays from Patrick’s Playbook.

I’m kinda sad about all the hate for some of fave characters. Pin may be pure ego, Kent can casually ruffle anyone’s feathers, while Ume is a manipulative bitch of pure, pure awesomeness (and all the better for it! :P All’s fair in love and war after all!); but hey, at least they make things more interesting than an entire season of the main couple making nervous puppy-dog glances at each other. You need people who can stir things up a bit. As dawww worthy as Kazahaya and Sawako is, you can only get so much out of the story when the joint protagonists personalities chiefly consist of being polite/friendly/helpful, naive and slightly jealous.

In summary, this show needs way more Yano. Best character ever! (and, no, I don’t just mean in the show!)

    • Posted January 23, 2011 at 10:58 am | Permalink

I’d take that hate with at least a pinch of salt, as awesome as Sawako is this show would indeed be nothing without such a fab ensemble cast. The pace and the realism is certainly complemented by the humour and (occasional) rage-worthiness, I’d say, rather than one being superior to the other. Yano is your fave character eh? Good choice. Btw, I’m glad you didn’t quit on it after season one, as I think you mentioned possibly doing elsewhere. Anyways, Yano-esque BBFs FTW, eh!

Ever will I be an enemy of Ume for she is an enemy of Yano.

I actually really like Kento. At least he has a personality that’s not just blanket nice perfect guy. He’s fun!
Imagine if Sawako and Kazehaya were to go on a date… It’d be excruciating to watch as they both trudge along silently with the occasional wild apologies. Now, if Kento and Sawako were to hang out, it’d be full of life and energy.

Yea, so I’m kind hoping Kento go after Sawako. That also has the added benefit of picking the pace up.

Anyway, it is indeed interesting to note the support Sawako has from her classmates at the start of the year. She’s grown so much since the beginning of last year/ last season.

TBH, I’d take ‘excruciating’ over ‘imaginary’. And yay, the classmates’ reactions were totally daaww-worthy, who says this show doesn’t show progress, lol.

When I saw the new guy in the OP I was like shit… there’s gonna be ANOTHER love rival (I hate love rivals in anime). I thought Ume 00 would finally be a worthy rival ever since she stuck her tongue out at Sawako in the first season, but she’s still a Fang-spamming sneaky bitch.

Although I don’t like the design/appearance of Yano she’s the type of character I like that I usually call The Strategist. Like Nobu-chan in Lovely Complex and the beloved FAIRY TRAPMOTHER (speaking of which, when will we see Shu Tears in this series when?).

    • Posted January 31, 2011 at 3:17 pm | Permalink

      a Fang-spamming sneaky bitch

Lol – I like it! ;) My guess is that she’ll pop up every now and then to stir Sawako up a bit, and nothing wrong with that I say (as long as she is in sneaky bitch mode, as opposed to fail bitch mode, like at the beginning of her arc in the last season, if you get what I mean). Oh lord, Shuu tears – dunno if I could take them again, tbh! :s

      • Posted January 31, 2011 at 3:26 pm | Permalink

Haha I sort of like her a bit ^^” but the ambush early this season was too sneaky and low for me. Go manipulate other people, Sawako’s still too weak for a direct hit! She would’ve been great last season if the failness was dialed down a bit. Especially the Pin part (I actually felt sorry for her >.< no one deserves something so horrid!).

SHU TEARS!!!!!!11!!!one!!1!! Wonder who will be Shu though, has to be someone Ume wants to manipulate/tease. Maybe some random guy, maybe Kent. Hmm….

        • Posted January 31, 2011 at 4:00 pm | Permalink

But ‘the Pin part’ was so freaking funny! Ah, she’s a tough girl, and there was no lasting damage, so I wouldn’t waste too much of your sympathy on her! I don’t think Ume and Kent like each other at all (I think he joked that she was ‘cuter before’, or something), but I think Kent’s friend thought differently, so maybe he could be the random guy… or… JOE! HAHA!
