Kimi ni Todoke S2 – 03: Great Teacher Kiraboshi

Who wouldn’t?!

It’s okay. He’s a good guy. Apparently. Either way, this epi was loadsa fun as we watch a master at work on a certain pair…

Summary-in-a-sentence:

It’s May already, and Sawako’s garden, facial expressions and teaching skills have come on in leaps and bounds, along with Kazehaya’s jealousy towards a certain fabulous blondie…

Hana:

You know, I’m starting to wonder if I do want Sawako to be able to GET FRIENDLY with everybody after all, seeing as how deliciously creepy some of those (now rarer) evil-in-appearance-but-actually-utterly-adorable-underneath effort-filled faces are.

Observe:

Creepilicious.

That last one, of course, was during that scene on the bench with the girls and blondie. Or rather, Shishou. Yes, the flaxen-haired, feminist philanthropist who has taken an understandable shine to our lovely heroine and decided to take her under his sparkly wing. Most of this week’s comedy arose from the admirable efforts and dawwful consequences of Master Kento’s teachings directed at his eager disciple, which were so effective that the pupil had already become the teacher by the end of this epi (er, albeit for different subjects). Yes, the second half of the epi with Sawako-sensei was just as awesome to behold, as we see the shy girl continue to blossom even more in confidence and happiness, due to all that sucking up from her lazy classmates. Thus, although Kento’s rather abrupt methods may leave a lot to be desired, at least his Kurako-esque smiling bossiness has turned Sawako’s hitherto small steps into one giant leap towards achieving her dream of a fabulous school life. Somebody give that man a twirling cape! You have earned it, my friend!

On the other hand, we still don’t really know much about him, and Kazehaya and Yano certainly have their separate issues with him. While our favourite BBF is simply looking out for Sawako (and who wouldn’t, after Ume-gate), Mr slow-poke love-interest simply seems to be suffering from a case of the green-eyed beasties.

If only Joe was talking about Kazehaya’s balls. Ryu, we sympathise.

Despite admitting to Ryu that he doesn’t want to beat around the bush, Kazehaya continues to do just that. Yes, that last scene in the classroom when he should have said (if not done) more than just thank his new sensei, his refusal to open up to Sawako was disappointing at best, and totally lame at worst. If I didn’t remember how frustrating it was to be sixteen, I’d probably have thrown one of those desks at him for telling her to just forget about what he’d previously said to her (hey, it’s only epi 3, I’ll save the throwing of heavy objects for later if this Sho(u)ta by name is still as diminutive in the Manning-Up category in a few more episodes’ time). That said (or rather, not), at least Kazehayah, er, might, be a little more proactive after he’s licked his wounds from the green eyed beasties and thus might launch an even more fabulous charm offensive of his own… We’ll see, eh…

It's okay to be confused but it will not be okay to remain confused...

Kazehaya was rather disappointing yet again this time around he took two steps forward only to take three steps back, but hopefully Kent’s presence will light a firestorm under his ass and so far Kazehaya seems sufficiently annoyed to complain but not enough to take action. Good to see that Kazehaya is not blind but his concern for Sawako’s delicate situation is merely a cover for his inability to make the first move a move that he must make. Hopefully this Kent is a man of honor though I hope Yano guts him if he proves otherwise. Still kudos to Yano for making her suspicions known so that Kent is now fairly warned that should he bring about Sawako any harm then Chizuru and Yano will kick his skinny ass into last year.

Still I am quite proud that Sawako did not really need Kent to smile, and certainly it seems that Kent is incapable of bringing out a true smile. Hopefully since Kent has opted to have a chat this will mean that he is willing to rise to the challenge of a good clean fight, unlike that sneaky little Ume. Hopefully in the future Sawako will not have to do great feats of charity to gain acceptance but I do like how the rest of the class was overawed by her glorious smile. May it be the last time that it is needed though since they should be stuck together from now until graduation and may they never forget who it was that saved them from academic doom.

Ryu seems to be more of a hands off kind of guy and that is well and good but I am hoping at some point Ryu gives Kazehaya a good kick in the right direction. It would be most grand if Ryu took on the role of a Schwartz Bruder to motivate Kazehaya to be what we all know he can be. Should this kick not be forth coming though, I am looking forward to seeing some Ryu-Chi during the long war for Sawako’s heart. Speaking of the long war I am dearly hoping that it will be a shadow war between Kazehaya and Kent and that Kazehaya show some more fire in fighting Kent than he is showing right now pursuing Sawako. May Kazehaya proves his dedication to Sawako with great fighting spirit and may his hand be GLOWING RED and may its LOUD ROAR TELL HIM TO GRASP HAPPINESS. That way I can see Kent get headbutted by a giant KING OF HEARTS. However at this rate maybe Sawako will be more hot-blooded than Kazehaya towards the end if this keeps up.

Timid boys don't get the girl...just saying.

So sad that herbal medicine is not respected these days.

So DO IT NAO.

And look how far Sawako has gone, seems you have some catching up to do.

...

I tell you this will come trus should you not act!

Don't get mad get going.

If nothing else it will put the fear into Ume.

Look a Sawako I must throw a pokeball.

Whatever it is he must not get it, do what you must Yano-san. Do what you must.

Yano Face.

Obligatory DAWWWWW shot.

I want a clean fight. A CLEAN FIGHT.

Kazehaya is like Harima Kenji from School Rumble minus a sense of humor minus anything else that makes a character likeable.

I’m ready to set sail on the Sawako/Kent ship. I would love a scene where Kazehaya is trying to disrupt Kent and Sawako’s happiness and Yano is all like “Look I like you Kazehaya but I’m SAWAKO’s friend. You had your shot but you blew it now scram.”

At the very least they should make Kent a competitor for Sawako’s heart not just another defeated rival ala Ume. It would be awesome for Sawako to be torn between Kent and Kazehaya though we ultimately know how it is gonna end up I feel like it would add more legitimacy to their relationship.

    Please?

Cmon Kimi ni Todoke be progressive for once.

He’s certainly being less than likeable at the moment. Master Kent, on the other, is a whole heap of fun, but I dunno if that ship could ever stay afloat, even without all the Sawahaya/ Kazeko (or whatever they should be called) shippers ready to torpedo it. And I completely agree with your last paras, it would add more legitimacy, and more drama (though not angst, lord knows there’s enough of that already) to the show…

That Creepilicious pic is absolute Delish! *cricket*. Hopefully there’s a nice vector version of it =3

Anyway, I enjoyed this episode, though I can’t help but feel I’ve seen it before… Wasn’t Sawako’s true smile witnessed last season, which also resulted in a “WHOAAA SHE’S SO CUTE” reaction? Other than that, KENT!! KENT!! PITCH A TENT!!! ON SA-WA-KO ‘CAUSE YOU’RE THE BEST!!! YEAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!… He’ll fit Ume’s shoes quite nicely, assuming he’s really the bad guy (that last pic is awesome, btw).

Look a Sawako I must throw a pokeball.

Creepilicious… delish… words (even made-up ones) are inadequate to describe this awesomeness.

A good point about the true smile deja vu; I think les people were around though, or Kazehaya stood in front of her to shield more people from seeing it, or something (dunno, can’t remember properly), but at least it’s seen (again) earlier in this series, which implies that the overal sense of preogree will be a lot swifter this time around (er, not that that’s saying much compared to how glacial the pace was last season, right…).

Looks like Kent has found himself another disciple…

    KIRABOSHI!!

I think Kent’s annoying. He’s meddling where it’s not necessary, wants attention, and says he’s the good guy even though he’s getting in between their relationship.

We shall see how “good” he is…and more importantly if he is a good enough fighter to challenge Chizuru in personal combat.

It’d be strange if Kent was a homo homo side character.

I guess, Kazehaya should taking initiative to sawako just like the immortal patrick.

Of course he should be more like Patrick, for to win love in this environment he must act decisively and resolutely.

Don’t we all just love dramatic conflicts that force a lazy love interest into action? It’s always the ones that don’t do anything very often that have the most potential, no?

What?! Likeable?!?! Kent’s a schemer, who just wants Kuronuma’s hot love and attention. Maybe he just wants her to become a “normal” girl, unlike Kazehaya, who is willing to treat Kuronuma whatever form she’s happy with. However the old saying of “nice guys finish last” will come up here in this show. While both Kazehaya and Kent are playing nice, one of them will have to change their colours.

I’m just not convinced that Kent is really interested her in that way, but it will certainly be interesting to watch if he does develop feelings for her, given his self-proclaimed good guy lable. Hmm…

I’m up to date with the manga translations so it’s not like I’m unfamiliar with this part of the story, but still, watching Kazehaya makes me want smack him over the head and order him to something other than make vague, confusing comments. Even Sawako is (slightly) less dense than that dufus!

I guess out of the two I’d be a Kent shipper, not because I think he’s a better match, but rather I much prefer his personality, even if his casual approach to things has the potential of doing more harm than good. I find Kazehaya far too bland, but with some rather unpleasant personality traits. I mean this is a gentle shoujo, so he’ll never be anything more than a nice guy who occassionally stumbles a bit, but c’mon, in real life anybody whose character faults include being stubbon, controlling (has to do things HIS way), jealous and angry regarding a significant other, and the attention they receive from others (male and female) will probably not end up the greatest boyfriend/girlfriend material.

Am I reading too much into this… probably, but still it’s what I sometimes think watching Kazehaya, other than, “god this guy is boring!” Ryu would make a much better lead, he at least shows you don’t have to stand out to have a deep, fleshed out personality.

Moaning aside, I do actually love this show, really! Mainly for the girls though… and Ryu of course :P .

Mate, I know exactly what you mean. And how’d I know you’d be a Kent shipper, lol (*cough* KimiKura ahoy *coughcough*). I guess ‘cos Kazehaya is such a nice guy, the hot [or should that be lukewarm, lol] temper/ selfishness is one of the few acceptable flaws they could have given him, as girls like a bit of jealousy in their men, but you are right that this (potentially) makes things rather problematic in the wider scheme of things… Hmm…

Oh, and I agree with the girls and Ryu are awesomeness – but we DEFO need to see more Ryu – MOAR!!!

I love Sawako’s deliciously creepy expressions too. I hope she keeps those up forever, even if it costs her a social life here and there.
