SURPRISE BITCHES
You didn’t think I was going to cover this show, now did you? >:3
The instant I saw this, I was sold. SOLD.
It’s been a heck of a long time since the last time an anime character figuratively stabbed a knife into my heart and twisted it, but damn if Miniwa Tsumiki not only stabs and twists, but she forcibly removes the blade too, causing my life force to seep from my broken body.
Apologies, I’m still in Mirai Nikki mode. Have a Youtube clip.
I don’t know who wrote the OP 「あっちでこっちで」 (Acchi de Kocchi de), but it sounds so much like Hyadain’s work (The mad genius behind Nichijou’s OP1 and OP2).
High tempo, high tension, balanced with little almost-minimalist interludes. Plus Tsumiki karaoke. I fudging love this.
Also, possible shoutout/reference/blatant-copy of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu’s walking/bicycle scene. AIC must have taken many, many notes from KyoAni.
The ED 「手をギュしてね」 (Te wo Gyu Shite ne), on the other hand, is rather generic sounding.
Then you read the lyrics and a veritable fountain of blood is practically guaranteed to erupt from the gaping cavity in your chest.
Yes, this is a slice-of-life anime. No monsters, no technologically advanced robots, no insanely convoluted plots over the selection of the next World Overlord.
Indeed, a slice-of-life anime, revolving entirely (well, mostly) around Miniwa Tsumiki and her interactions with Otonashi Io. Where Tsumiki just cannot force herself to confess her love and Io is oblivious to her affections to the point of a possible symptom of brain damage.
Is the nature of the character relationship overused, and predictable? Why, yes.
And yet it is oh so SPLENDIFEROUS.
Maybe it’s because I don’t actively seek out moeblob anime to watch, maybe it’s because the last few moeblob anime that I’ve watched in recent memory (Ikoku Meiro no Croisée, Lucky Star – hey it’s awesome enough to rewatch) haven’t actually made use of a romance dynamic.
But I’m not going to overanalyze this just yet. That time will come, probably around episode 7 when my brain finally catches up with my ruptured heart and politely asks it to get a hold of itself.
I like what AIC did with the scene changes. Just by using a few arrows to represent character movement, they’ve made something boring into something interesting, although it probably won’t be ranking among otakus’ Top 10 Greatest Anime Scenes any time soon.
Also, I like how non-essential characters are given 50% opacity. What. I don’t know how else to describe it.
But it’s a simple way to differentiate the main characters from everyone else, and it looks better than black and white silhouettes.
Okay so not every scene is about Tsumiki and Io. Which is a good thing, because otherwise I’d be comatose every time I watch an episode.
Thankfully, the non- Tsumiki-Io bits are entertaining on their own, and have quite a bit of the Nichijou spontaneity and randomness if not quite going into the realms of the improbable.
Dat Tsumiki full parry. LETS GO SAKAKI
The episode preview is pretty well done too. Simplistic, easy on the animation budget, a little after-dinner mint to counteract the major gastronomical MOE buffet that makes up the episode proper.
Only problem is that I end up not paying attention to the scrolling text, but it’s not like I can’t watch it again.
NOW ARE YOU READY FOR THE MOST HEARTRENDING PART OF THE EPISODE?
BULLSHIT YOURE NOT READY YOU WONT EVER BE READY

F*** my life now I have to go and watch this show. Damn you.
GREAT SUCCESS
This show is awesome. Lately this luky-star-derived shows have been great and now we are given a slice of life romantic comedy. I’m not that much into moe but this is my favorite for the season.
I haven’t really been into moe for a while, but somehow Acchi Kocchi just hits everything in the right spots. It’s possibly my favourite for the season too.
Looks fun. But no more nyanko/cats for me.
And DAT HAIR
Technically she’s not a cat – she just has reaaaally expressive anime hair~
This show will make me ‘slpode my heart and I will like it. A lot.
These moeblobs be turning all of us into masochists O:
Yeah!Yeah!Yeah!…Yahoi! \(*_*)/ I love this show. I’m disappointed you didn’t include the epic fall of Sensei and how they deduced their heater got broken. That was hilarious! This + Nyaruko-san = AWESOME season!
There’s really too much stuff per episode to cover. I think it’s more than enough to simply focus on Tsumiki and Io ;D
I’ve not been too big on the slice-of-life comedies. But this one is hitting the Azumanga Daioh itch. There’s a charm to it that just works better than the rest. It might grow stale, but I’m in it for week over week watching.
But I’d punch anyone that gave me “surprise” chocolate. Just saying.
Oh, I like a girl with a bizarre sense of humour, but I guess Mayoi really isn’t my type.
Tsumiki is very cute.
But that crazy scientist girl is so damn annoying.
I wonder why won’t the guy punch her.
Because she says the things that everyone else is too embarrassed to say (゚∀゚)
are you for realzies?
I am very real. I’m the realest person you’re ever gonna meet! (*^3^)/~☆
That looks like a cuter, purer version of Konata Izumi mixed with Yuki Nagato fffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu– I GOTTA WATCH THIS FREAKING SHOW NOW
SLICE-OF-CHOCOLATE-COATED-SUGAR-GLAZED-LIFE EVERY WEEK
IF I COULD LIKE THIS COMMENT A THOUSAND TIMES AND SHARE IT IN TWITTER, FACEBOOK AND WHATEVER ELSE I WOULD
WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY FEELS BRO (*´Д`)
I’m actually going to watch this show because of this post… and ahoge.
I hope my nutbladder’s ready.
Simultaneous rupturing of the aorta and other internal organs is a real and present danger :0
Well, what’s this show that JohnnyYandere is watching this season? Acchi Kocchi, you say? Well, I guess I might as well check it out so I can watch alongside the posts, seeing as this is the guy who made the latter part of Future Diary roughly 90% more fun. *Loads up video* *Starts to watch* … *Dies of burst heartstrings* *Is swiftly resurrected by the pathological need to see more of this* *Episode ends* *Whacks head against wall in a crazed fashion screaming ‘KAWAII KAWAII KAWAII!’ at the top of voice*
Yeah, I’m totally on board with this shit. I’ll watch episode two tomorrow.
I have totally no interest in this outside of that EVO Moment #37 reference (why yes, I do work for shoryuken.com, why do you ask). But that said…
“UNBELIEVABLE!!! Tsumiki with a FULL PARRY. into combo and win”
“Acchi-Kocchi 01! IT’S MADNESS!!! It’s UNADULTERATED MADNESS!!!”
