Rinne no Lagrange S2 – 02: Making Up by Making Out

Sadly they can’t seem to get along on their own…

This post is late but the KISSING was everything I hoped it to be. The war between Digigurio and Dizelmine now boils down to a war for survival, and to be fair there is no easy out since doing nothing would simply result in the destruction of both planets in one if not two super novae. Right now Digigurio is looking like a foppish loser, sure he wants to save his planet from Dizelmine but he’s not doing much in the way of offering a long term solution. Perhaps in days past Guivini and Dizie were willing to work out something but once the Voxes entered the equation the possibility of having a planet killer made the simplest solution well within reach. Still while the Onii-chan War rages Muginami and Lan finally came around and rekindled their love for Madoka. With this glorious reunion Asteria now has the forces she needs to take on two planetary kingdoms. First she must deal with her lackeys…

Natsuyuki Rendezvous episodes 01-03: Mai Dead Husbando Can’t Be This Cute…

…and by ‘Cute’, I mean ‘Annoying’.

While the angsty, serial-plant-buying bishie and the slow start were negatives, once you get past the first ten minutes, this new josei show from the noitaminA time-slot with its pretty art and gentle humour really grows on you. Plus, it gets bonus points for an early confession and its frank, grown up discussion of feelings and sex. And, as if all that wasn’t enough, you get an entertainingly poltergeist-y dead husband who keeps cock-blocking the afore-mentioned angsty bishie from making a move on his sad waifu. Josei/ noitaminA/ dodgy love-triangle fans, rejoice!

Muv Luv Alternative – Total Eclipse – 03: TSF 0083 Plus

I HAVE YOU NOW…

So now that Kyoto has been reduced to rubble and ruin it only seems proper that the UN get its shit together now that almost all of Eurasia has been lost. I am doing my best to avoid spoilers and the like and as a green horn I cannot understand how having a Top Gun program is going to help humanity crush the BETA threat and expel them from Holy Terra in 40,000 xeno pyres. Of course the Tyranids break every rule in science fiction so just give me a minute while I put on Highway to the Dangerzone…

Tari Tari – 03: No Money

Thus did Taichi’s nee-sama discover her ability to channel a Shining Finger attack.

I guess Wakana is going to take a long while before she fully embraces her new friends, but quite why she is so apprehensive is a mystery though hopefully it will end soon. In the mean time she seems to have gained a new stalker who is likely an old friend of her mother’s. Unfortunately Wakana is not adept at foreign languages and mistakes the poor European for an Anglo-Saxon and takes him for a beggar. While I am sure that Wakana is a smart girl, I rather enjoyed her attempts to fend off the Euro with cries of “No Money.” On the Konatsu front it seems that with recital over with her club has largely gone back to student life and she is now in need of hardened veterans to fill her club roster. Thankfully she already has Sawa and she did well to draft Wakana. Ta-kun also has his club of one status rescinded, and so begins Konatsu’s plan to start a hostile takeover of the badminton club.

Kimi no Iru Machi chapters 91-100 – Bang

The Kyosuke arch-arc comes to and end, and in a way that I wasn’t sure the manga would have the guts to pull off. But now the floodgates are open for drama the likes of which we’ve never seen before. Well, that I haven’t seen before.

Tari Tari 01-02: Band of Bards

Hmm…I wonder if Sawa does horse archery in her spare time.

I am surprised by the number of shows that have caught my interest this summer, usually this is the slowest part of the year but Tari Tari has managed to stand out a bit for me. It looks to be a more laid back slice of life series and while I feared that Wakana would be a pouty little whiner I am very much relieved that she is more than capable of lending a hand. In fact while Wakana seems to be the least social of the group, there is plenty of hope for her as she seems willing to take one for the team even if she demands tribute in the form of cake. I am not sure yet if this series is about making the most of your last year as a kid or if this is more about growing up into being an adult. To be sure Wakana’s mother will figure in, but I wonder if we are going to dwell on the childhoods of the others. Judging by the setup Wakana is going to be in line for the most development though who knows maybe Wein has a dark secret that he has yet to reveal.

Rinne no Lagrange S2 – 01: Reunion

Indeed for the power of Yuri is infinite.

Rinne is back and I for one welcome back Maru Maru time with open arms. It seems like an eternity has passed but Rinne seems to be back on course to brighten up my day. The boys from DeMetrio are now Madoka’s lackeys, and they seem to be most happy and content working for Hiroshi. It was a much needed change in leadership as Digigurio was yuri hating lunatic that was obsessed with defeating Dizelmine. Quite how Villabulio usurped Yurikano’s throne is mystery but I suppose that such matters will be illuminated on later. With the regime change for DeMetrio I hope that Kirikiri, Izzo, and Array recognize that Madoka is the only leader they will need until Yurikano returns. Dizelmine and Alliguilio are on course for a major show down as their ideals seem to be in conflict, however they both will be in for a major disappointment if they discount Madoka and Asteria.

Muv Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse – 02: The Blood of Martyrs

I wonder if tank commanders also want to get closer so they can hit the enemy with their swords…

I have to hand it to Satelight they pulled a Halo Reach scenario in that I was left hoping somehow some way enough of them would make it out. Even as casulaties mounted I thought that Yui, Yamshiro, and Izumi would have survived and would soon begin the long road to crazed BETA hunters Alas in the grim future of the 1990s there is only REAL WAR and the outcome was exactly the kind you would have expected when students were tossed into combat. Many otome died this episode and many more grunts were crushed beneath a stampede of Tyranid biomorphs. I still find the Tyranid units to be horribly broken, but they are a weapon of little subtlety they have the numbers and then reaped a fearsome toll of Imperial Japanese troops. Sadly while the BETA aren’t pulling any punches the humans seem to be riddled with scruples and are conducting this war for survival as if they fully expect to have all their troops home by Christmas. Artillery seems to have a much more devastating effect than absolute defense lines that seem to be made of tissue paper, but I am not seeing Soviet style massed barrages. I understand that shelling cities is a hard thing to do, but unless the Americans are also hoarding the Fire Direction Center there should be no reason why artillery can’t be used judiciously.

Muv Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse – 01: The New Imperial Guard

Sadly there were no Space Marines, and no Dreadnoughts to defend Luna.

Another season another slim crop of mecha series to follow and with the dreadful lack of new Real Robot all that is left is ML Total Eclipse. I have to be honest as a spin-off of a spin-off things can get completely out of hand, but it will be fun to have no spoilers even if we must gauge the series as it airs. Perhaps they would have been better off leaving the baggage of Muv Luv Alternative behind as inevitably they will have to insert not so subtle fan service to keep VN fans happy, still big bulky robots are still a draw and hopefully will be the main draw. Thankfully the skin tight suits did change color and in an effort to add a veneer of realism they even broke out he great coats during cold nights. Man-kind teeters at the brink of extinction and given how they seem to really want to play this straight I am hoping that this means we will be mercifully spared a pointless beach episode and/or mall rat episode.

2012 Summer Season Preview and Some First Impressions

It’s that time again! Summer season is starting, and here’s our thoughts on how it looks as the first handful of shows are starting to air. As usual, our information comes from Scamp’s chart, ANN, MAL, Wikipedia, the usual suspects. And as always, Crusader’s standard disclaimer applies.

A Message from the NKVD: Well its time once again to point out this is a preview, and not a review. That “p” makes a difference a very big difference in fact. On another note many of us are old grouchy mean spirited cynics and not wide eyed idealistic fat cat communist NEETs. If you are part of the “animu is SRSfkn business” part of the fandom do yourself a favor and just read the summary from ANN so you can preserve your fragile optimism for your harem animu. Other than that Liberty Prime is watching and ready to initiate directive 7395, destroy all communists.

(Note from Crusader: I delayed this post due to a ridiculous 3 hour delay at LAX after AX2012 Day 3, to make up for it I watched all the released subs I could get my hands on the good the bad and the down right ugly…)
